Another trip has ended

The guys have headed out

I'm sittin in my car

With the interstate crowd

A week has come and gone by

The good times were the best

But now I think it's finally time

I got a little rest

I did what I did for the fun of it

Cost me a lot of bucks

A whole lot of magic came wandering in

Couldn't get enough

And things I did every night I was there

Are memories I've made

And I'm sure I'll do it all again

On the next MAB birthday!

Thanks MAB, OD, and Kevin for all the fun times we had!! See you in November!!

I guess I'll give a brief overview of my trip to Nashville to meet Kevin and OD for MAB's birthday bash.

Monday: Drove all day. That afternoon we went grocery shopping, ate in, and chilled! We were all tired.

Tuesday: Practiced songs all day. Went to the Opry Back Stage Grill to catch The Willies Nashville, featuring Steve Williams and Will Nance. Was able to pay Steve for a CD he gave me last year at Frank Brown Songwriters Festival.

Wednesday: Left around 11:30am for Sam's Jams at Bobby's Idol Hour. Managed to take a wrong exit off Briley and took a scenic route through downtown Nashville. BUT, it turned out to be a great accident, because it seemed shorter and faster. Kevin and I were in a round at 1pm and played 3 songs each. Went out to lunch with MAB, Charles, Janet, and 3 other new friends, who's names I just can't remember. (A sign of "aging") Spent the rest f the afternoon at Sam's Jams then went to Commodore for an 8pm MAB show. Was great!

Thursday: Went to breakfast with MAB and some of his special friends. A bunch of really fun, cool, interesting, "old" guys! (But don't tell them that! They think they are still teens!) Didn't practice songs. OPPSSS!! Spent the day chilling. Thursday night Kevin and I were in a 6:30pm round and played 3 songs. I BLEW IT on the first 2 songs, but nailed it on the last one, "Bored Games". MAB's birthday bash started just after 8pm and ran until after 10pm. Was an AWSOME show!! Jimbeau, Bonnie Lee Panda, Alan Sherville, Charles and Janet, Sam Cooper, Jason Gregory, a few special guests that just showed up, plus others I can't remember. (DAMN aging!!)

Friday: Went to breakfast with MAB and special friends again. Really enjoy those guys. I have a standing invitation next time I'm in town. MAB took us on a tour of Nashville and showed us where all the rich live. BIG houses on 1+ acres. Went downtown to the Musicians Hall of Fame. MAB got real upset at the Jimmy Hendrix guitar display, because it was not strung correctly. He is going to have a word with the management! he got one of the managers to give us a sneak preview of the Woodstock drum set that won't be on official display until next month. It is a really cool museum!

Saturday: Chilled all day! Took a long nap. We ate in.

Sunday: A 10 1/2 hour drive home! Was a GREAT TIME guys!! We'll do it again!

Hey Nod,

So good to hear from you. Are you still holding down the UK? Hope everything is well. A friend of mine, Scott Southworth, is over there right now, going through Ireland, Scotland and the rest of the UK. Great writer and performer and a great person. You can go to SCOTT SOUTHWORTH on Facebook and see videos he is putting up.

Today is my birthday and we are doing a show at BOBBY'S IDLE HOUR. Having Kevin Emmerick (Kev MO) and Phil Griggs (Phil Boy) open it up around 6:30. They played once yesterday so are pretty well geared up. OD is here supervising everything as long as he is not in the beer too much. (FAT CHANCE!)

The NAMM show was very good and our product, the Zylia, recording system, was voted BEST OF SHOW. Reminded me of some of the stuff you have been developing and sent me years ago. Gotta love smart people and their inventions.

Great to hear from you and please continue to post. We're trying to rekindle some interest here.

Happy Belated Birthday!!  Best Wishes.  I'll raise a late dram (any excuse!).

I will look up Scott's Facebook page.  Hopefully he will be enjoying his time.  We seem to be going from great weather to torrential rain.  Still, many come to Scotland to experience the atmosphere and that means the weather too.

Although we have a lot of mountains, Ben Nevis is the highest at 4,411ft, they are not as high as some countries.  But in an afternoon climb, you can experience all the weather possible - hence so many need rescuing!

Glad the product went down well at NAMM.  I would love to get involved in designing a product like that again.

It reminds me that one interesting thing is a company who develops really expensive hi fi here in Scotland now supplies the master tapes to stream on you hi fi.  They have their own jazz and classical labels but I believe the lies of Neil Young was wanting to be included.  MP3 ain't good enough to play on their systems ;-)  https://linn.co.uk/

Hope you had a good day and time since your birthday.

Cheers

Well now, there seems to have been some activity on this thread I was not aware of.  Forgive me if I'm a little out of breath, I just returned from a run.  Well that would be my latest "beer run" but I have a fresh 18 pack of Budlights to help get me through this post.  Sadly my beer drinking habit goes against everything my SongRamp buddy Dave Rice tried to warn me about; but I have just returned from a trip to Nashville where my buddies "KevMO" and "Philboy" were bad examples for me.  In fact; they not only drank my beer but they hid their bottles of bourbon in the freezer so I couldn't find them.

Oh my, what a trip we had.  We began planning for this trip last February and it seemed so far off in the future I didn't think I would have to ever worry about packing or making that long assed drive from Ohio to Nashville.  However; the time passed quickly and the next thing I knew I was in Cinci trying to get across the Ohio River on a bridge they were doing construction work on.  It wasn't bad going down to Nashville because it was a Saturday and I left home at 4:30am and got to Cinci early enough there was little traffic.  However on my return trip the traffic was much worse and it took me nearly 2 hours to cross that bridge.  I got impatient and thought about jumping off the bridge a couple of times to end it all; but as I was about to exit my vehicle the lane of traffic I was in moved forward a cars length and I had to get back in my seat and move forward.  S.O.B.

I didn't have to worry about performing any songs like Philboy and KevMo did because I don't perform anymore.  I was never very good at performing in my earlier years but after years of smoking and drinking beer I now suck at it worse than ever before.  In fact the last time I performed I did receive a lot of tips but they were all to make me stop playing and not for my ability to play my songs.  S.O.B.

The plans for my trip and my normal procrastination ended when my Army buddy "Mackboy" called me to suggest he drive up to Nashville from Atlanta and I drive down a couple of days early so we could meet up and continue our reunions from the past 45 years.  We both got out in 1973 and along with another Army buddy "Markboy" we met every year for a reunion (mostly in Memphis because we loved the music on Beale Street) until we lost Markboy in 2001.  That's what we did and I suggested meeting at the Motel 6 connected to the recently opened club "Broken Spoke" that Philboy remembers from his business travels through Nashville back in the 90's.  Philboy and I have stayed there before during a previous Nashville visit but the Broken Spoke had been closed for years do to a fire.  They recently reopened the club and once again have live music, meaning singer/songwriters.  We were happy to stay some place with an attached bar to get a bite to eat, drink some beer, and stagger back to our rooms.  However; a cop did drive by and threaten to arrest us for "drunk walking with attempt to crawl".  However because we were Vet's he let us go.  Ha!!! (just teasin).

On Sunday I got a call from MAB wondering if I was in town or not.  Please realize I have an old flip top cell phone that is not connected to the internet at all.  It wasn't until I got home I saw I had numerous emails from MAB wondering if I was in town or not and why I did'nt answer his emails.  I didn't have a smart phone like most people and I had no idea he had been emailing me; also I rarely check my cell phone so I didn't even realize he had left me numerous phone calls for me to answer.  However; MAB called me on Sunday around 8:00 and woke my drunk ass up, so we finally connected and MAB was kind enough to come over and pick Mackboy and myself up and take us out for lunch.  That would be only one of many times MAB went out of his way to show me and the boys a great time.

The next morning (Monday) was supposed to be the day I left home to begin my journey; but I was already in town and the boys (KevMO and Philboy) were not scheduled to arrive until later that afternoon (the Kid from Texas was not able to make the trip).  Mackboy and I went out for breakfast and said our "good-byes" for another year and another trip.  I called MAB and he told me to come over to his and Tina's house; which I did.  After a cup of coffee with MAB and a short visit, MAB wanted to go out for lunch.  He took me to one of his favorite hang-outs and he ordered beef tips with noodles, mashed potatoes, and green beans.  S.O.B.   I was really sorry I had a late breakfast because his meal looked so good; but I did manage to put down a tasty bar-be-que pulled pork sandwich.  It was very good.

We got back to MAB and Tina's but it was getting into late afternoon and the guys were about to come into town.  We had rented a large house for a week from some friends of MAB.  I left MAB and made my trip across Nashville to meet the guys.  While driving across town I got a call from KevMo that the security code the landlord gave us would not open the front door.  We went over the code but it would still not open the door for him.  KevMo walked to the back of the house, took a few steps to the back deck and tried the sliding glass door.  S.O.B.   It was not locked so he entered the house and walked to the front room to unlock the main door.  On his way back to the kitchen area (with the sliding glass door) he walked into the kitchen to find a young kid entering the sliding glass door.  KevMo says the kid was as surprised as he was and the kid's eyes got as big as silver dollars.  He and the buddy behind him took off in different directions and we never saw them again.  I arrived shortly after and that caused a lot of confusion for us.  The owners were leaving that very same day for a trip to London and I thought they had left early in the morning so I didn't call them, thinking they may be asleep crossing the Atlantic ocean so I sent her a text message.  Turns out they were at the Nashville airport and she got back with me.  Of course they were concerned about intruders and suggested we call the police.  I didn't want to get that involved and suggested they do that if they wanted to; which they did.  By the time the cops arrived Philboy was there and we had KevMo settled down by pouring a few shots of bourbon down him (I'm only teasing).  The truth is; we didn't feel threatened at all and the kids had obviously been there before enjoying watching TV in the air-conditioning and drinking the bottled water in the fridge.  However they did no damage at all from their pervious visits so we were not concerned at all.  The guys made a trip to the grocery and KevMo fixed a great Chinese meal for when MAB, Tina, JaLinda, and Charles showed up that evening.  It was a low keyed evening and we ended things early.  The next day the maintenance man showed up to put on new locks and screens where they had been damaged.

I may be over my alotted words allowed for a post so maybe I should break this post up.  I'll be back.

Okay, I'm back for my 2nd post.  Unlike Philboy this old guy remembers every detail with precision and precise detail.  Ha!!! (only teasin).

Day 2.....
We had Tuesday open for the most part except that night a pro writer friend of Philboy's was performing at a nearby club called the Opry Back Stage Grill (or something like that).  Philboy and I are both retired but KevMo is still an active working member of society and is a self employed business man with his own computer advisory company.  Typically KevMo's business runs pretty smoothly (according to him) but during our trip a few of his customers were experiencing computer problems that he needed to deal with.  On Tuesday morning we enjoyed some coffee on the back deck, inbetween KevMo's attempts to help his customers deal with their computer issues.  He was shocked that all of a sudden a few customers had issues and needed his help to solve them.  He was pretty busy on his laptop so Philboy and I made a trip to Walmart and we stopped by the Opry Back Stage Grill for lunch and to check the place out because we intended to go back there that evening to hear his friend Steve Williams along with Will Nance, his wife,  and another talented lady perform that evening.  Philboy and I sat at the bar for lunch and once we paid our bill and were walking out to the parking lot, Philboy thought maybe we should make a reservation for that evening.  I stayed outside while he went back inside until time went by and the sun was beating down on me, and I realize I should not have allowed the windy Philboy to go back inside on his own.  In his defense there was another person ahead of him taking their good old time and when I got back inside (to the air-conditioning) Philboy was just beginning to speak to the owner to make our reservations.  We showed up that evening expecting to hear Steve Williams and Will perform some of their hit songs but they began their show performing older tunes to please the dinner crowd.  We didn't stay around long enough to hear them perform their former hit songs.

This gives me a chance to pick on Philboy a little bit, for those of you that have never met him.  Philboy is a wonderful guy and truly a very dear friend of mine.  He has put up with this old guy on many visits to Nashville over the years, when I would get in the beer and he has always been very good about being my designated driver and getting me back to our motel safe and sound.  Everyone truly loves Philboy for the good man he is; but I have to tell on him a little.  Philboy is a former computer geek and he has a natural tendancy to over analyze everything.  Things have to make sense to him and everything must fall into place before he can make sense of it and accept the facts.

Philboy has a great sense of direction and has a built in GPS system in his brain.  He often talks to himself while trying to figure out which direction he is driving and where all the roads will take him.  During one trip to Bobby's Idol Hour, Philby took the wrong exit and refused to turn around like KevMo, myself, and the GPS on KevMo's phone suggested. However; Philboy talked to himself during the entire drive and did indeed end up at our location on time.  It was during another trip Philboy gave KevMo and I a quote that was out of a Yogi Berra book. KevMo was trying to use the GPS from his smart phone to help Philboy out when Philboy blurted out "I know where it is; I just don't know how to get there".  OMG!!!   KevMo and I laughed over that one all the way to town and we couldn't wait to share his statement with MAB and Tina once we met up with them.  Oh, that was so precious.

Okay, our entertainment for Tuesday evening is over and we're back at the house enjoying a few drinks on the back deck.  Wednesday morning found us enjoying our coffee on the back deck but we didn't have much time before the boy's had to check in at Sam's Jam at the famous 16th Avenue bar "Bobby's Idol Hour".  They were scheduled to go on at 1:00.

Surprisingly we got there early and thought KevMo and Philboy would be the first act; but once we arrived (shortly after noon), there was already another round going on.  Okay; we could deal with that and obviously Sam had a lot of people that wanted to perform that day.  Our boy's went on around 1:00 and did a very good job.  The music continued that day (even though we left for lunch) but when we came back long before MAB's saved slot to perform at 4:00 everything was moving along and Sam's Jam included many acts.  Once MAB got on stage he included Jalinda and Charles into his act and later Charles and JaLinda performed their own show also.  It was a great time.

Now for the benefit of Wags, I have to tell the story of JaLinda bringing in a couple of her girlfriends to witness what her and Charles do in the entertainment business.  Sometime during the show on Wednesday, the barmaid (and MAB's friend, but damn if I can remember her name) remembered the Old Dog from a previous trip and how I once slipped some dollar bills in the back pocket of her jeans.  After just meeting JaLinda's friends,  the bar maid came over and said her back pockets still had room for dollar bills; which I gladly stuffed a few in her back pocket.  JaLinda's friend sitting next to me was not impressed and looked away.  Once the bar maid left I looked at JaLinda's friend (I called JaDevon) to explain it was not as bad as it seemed, the barmaid was my relative.  Ha!!!   JaDevon looked at me and said "Thanks, that helps".  Oh, it didn't stop there Wags, JaLinda's other friend (I called Ja...something......  Damn I've having a Philboy moment), but she was really nice and went along with my drunken assed humor and allowed me to propose to her, even though she packed a rock on her left hand the size of a Cadillac.bumper.

OMG what a time we had and MAB's show was fantastic but even I was not prepared for the MAB show that would tale place on Thursday evening, that birthday show he brought in all of his friends to perform for his birthday; but mostly for Susie's Memorial Party.  S.O.B.  That show needs another post and more explanation.  I'll grab another beer and be back.

Holy Crap, I just made a beer run and half of them are gone already.  I'm going to have to install security camera's because I swear my neighbor is sneaking into my house and drinking my beer while I'm upstairs on the computer.  That bastard, I really like the guy but if I have video of him stealing my beer and can sue for reperations and make him open an account at my buddy Russell's Drive Thur.  (hiccup.... sorry about that), that would solve everything.

Okay, were was I with my story.  Okay, it's Thursday and the boys and I begin our morning with KevMo working on his laptop while Philboy and I traveled across town to meet MAB and his friends at a breakfast hangout they enjoy.  I have to say these folks were very entertaining and a lot of fun to be around with all of their stories.  There were many characters with many stories to include an old guy that once played bass guitar for Sonny James (MAB did I get that name right)???  Anyway they all had interesting stories and the main character was MAB's neighbor Furman (Oh MAB, did I get that name right)???   Anyway, Philboy really enjoyed himself and so did I.  The next morning we met back with them again and took KevMo with us this time.  We all enjoyed our vistit with them.

I hate to admit I don't recall what we did on Thursday afternoon; but I'd suggest we went back to the house to allow the guys to rehearse their songs while the Old Dog took a long over due nap.  Later in the late afternoon we made our way back to Bobby's Idol Hour for the MAB Birthday Bash.  The boys went on early and did a great job even though Philboy had a moment he forgot his lyrics but he came out of it in good form. MAB took the stage just after 8:00pm and the night was on.

A quick background story behind that evening.  MAB's friend, performing artist, and hit songwriter Jimbeau Hinson showed up at the club around 6:30.  This was unlike Jimbeau to show up so early and he even made the trip on his own leaving his wife Brenda behind because she wasn't able to be ready in time (Brenda showed up later driving a seperate vehicle).  The reason Jimbeau showed up so early is because he read on an internet advertisement for the evening that KevMo would be performing.  Well Jimbeau had no idea I had been calling our friend Kevin Emmerich "KevMo" for years.  Jimbeau thought the famous performer "KebMO" was going to perform, so he showed up early not to miss his show. Jimbeau was so disappointed to learn of his mistake but it was a great moment of laughter for the rest of us.

Okay, I'll do my best to describe MAB's show but I'll need to make another post.  At this point I would really like to take a break and get a bite to eat but S.O.B.  if I stop now MAB would really be upset if I stop to eat and pass out in my lazyboy.  I'll try my best to continue (hiccup).

OD OldDog

Okay, the Old Dog is back and ready to tell more about our trip and MAB's fantastic Birthday show.  Please realize though, the Old Dog got into the beer the other day when I began telling about our trip because I was trying to find any excuse not to go out and mow the yard.  I settled that issue because my younger Brother Blake is always looking out for me and trying to help this lazy old guy get by.  I made a deal with Brother Blake the other day that I would gladly agree to give him my zero turn mower if he'd take on the responsibility of mowing my yard in the future for me.  He agreed but he would have done it for me anyway, he certainly didn't need my mower to entice him into making the deal, his John Deere mower is bigger and better than mine.  I must admit however his kindness did make me regret beating his ass up so often when we were kids.  I'm sure he didn't "forget" but I'm happy he was able to "forgive".  Ha!!! (he's a much better man than me).

Hey, funny back story about this Old Dog making my long as*ed posts the other day.  When I quit posting to go downstairs to fix something to eat, my cell phone rang (which I rarely hear because I don't carry it with me, it sits on my kitchen counter).  It was from MAB who had finished a performance tour with friends up the East coast and was sitting in the Columbus, Ohio airport (an hour and a half from my house).  MAB thought it funny he left his destination, they sent him to Atlanta for a connection flight, that flight took him to Columbus for a connection flight to Nashville.  No wonder most of us hate to travel by air.  Anyway I explained to MAB I had been in the beer a little and answering some posts on SongRamp.  He wasn't going to be in Columbus long and I was not in any condition to drive down there so we spoke for a few minutes over the phone and said "good-bye".

Okay, where was I with my story and recap of the MAB Birthday Show.  Okay, allow me to give a short background story of the bar "Bobby's Idol Hour".  I truly can't give you a history of the old hang out once frequented by the songwriters, musicians, Artist's, and label people of the 60's; but Bobby's Idol Hour has seen many different names and owners over the years, and is the last of the remaining hangouts on  the legondary 16th Avenue. Like many other former historic sites, the bar is scheduled for the wrecking ball soon to give way to another high rise office building, Condo, or Apartment complex because of it's near location to downtown Nashville (as I understand it).

However; early Thursday morning the guys (Philboy, KevMo and I) wake up in our rented Nashville home to enjoy some coffee on the back deck (which didn't have a roof to keep out the sun and was nice in the morning before noon, but way to hot to enjoy in the afternoon).  That morning Philboy and I left KevMo working on his computer to join MAB and his friends across town to BoJangles which was their favorite breakfast hangout.   MAB had mentioned this spot before we arrived in town and mentioned we had to join him and meet his friends there.  I didn't realize until Philboy arrived that morning BoJangles was the fast food place that was known for it's chicken and also the place that sponcered MAB's friend Doak with a few buckets of chicken during Doak's many years of his "3rd Sunday at 3:00" guitar pulls Doak held for many years.  Once inside we met up with MAB and he introduced us to his friends.  I've told this story before but it's worth mentioning they were a great group of people and a lot of fun to hang out with.  They had so many stories we enjoyed but so many I won't even begin to tell you all of them.  It's truly a case of "you would have to been there".

We ended up back at the rental house with KevMo and Philboy rehearsing their songs.  The rehearsal's were particularly important because KevMo ( the better musician of all of us) had learned some lead guitar parts to add to Philboy's songs.  I have to admit KevMo's part's added a lot to Philboy's songs and Philboy quickly got  used to someone adding guitar licks to his songs.  It worked out well.

Okay, we leave our rental house late Thursday afternoon and make our way through the Nashville traffic to 16th Avenue and the location for Bobby's Idol Hour; which was being hosted by MAB's friends Jalinda and Charles.  Philboy was feeling pretty confident because his missed exit the day before allowed him to become more comfortable with our new route to get there.  I think this was the trip that KevMo was sitting in the seat next to Philboy and relying on his GPS when Philboy made the now famous Yogi Berra statement "I Know Where It Is, I Just Don't Know How To Get There".  Ha!!!  KevMo and I laughed all the way to town over that one and we couldn't wait to share Philboy's statement with MAB and the others.

Okay, we arrived early enough to find a good parking spot (which is not easy to do).  There was already a round going on before Philboy and KevMo were scheduled to go on; but the boys were early and ready to take the stage. This was about the time Jimbeau Hinson showed up thinking he was going to hear to famous artist "KebMO" I told you about in an earlier post.  A funny story for all of us because Jimbeau didn't realize of Keven's nickname of "KevMo".

Okay, I don't want to go over my alotted words so I'll stop here and make another post.  It will also allow me to make a trip downstairs to get another beer.

OD OldDog

Okay, it's Thursday evening, the date we had all planned our trip for; to help MAB celebrate his Birthday Show; but there was another reason for us to be there.  MAB and Tina's dear friend Susie Martin had been fighting cancer for nearly two years but she recently lost her battle and sadly passed away.  S.O.B.   MAB was her dear friend and he was the one taking her back and forth for most of her treatments, so it was especially difficult for him to deal with.  MAB decided to make his Birthday Bash to include a Susie Memorial event.  And so it was.

MAB takes the stage just shortly after 8:00pm.  Oh, he doesn't just take the stage but he takes over the stage and soon owns it.  By this time many younger college kids show up thinking they are going to support their friends performing that night; but they have no idea what they are about to witness.  Bobby's Idol Hour is a small venue so the tables in the seating area didn't hold that many and they were all taken by us that showed up early.  There was a smaller area for standing room only that they gathered and listened to the show MAB and others put on.  I watched them closely because I was curious if they would enjoy MAB's performance or not ; but they got into every song he played and every song from every guest performer he brought onto the stage.  The first was hit songwriter and MAB's good buddy Jimbeau Hinson.  OMG!!!   What a show Jimbeau and MAB performed together and the audience listened to every song simply spellbound by their performance. For them and most of us also; it was a lesson and a great performance put on by great artiist's in Nashville.  S.O.B.

The show and entertainment didn't stop with MAB and Jimbeau.  MAB later brought on his hit songwriting friends like Paul Jefferson, his good buddy Heino and his "New Crew" which consisted of the better songwriters and newer artists that began as a student of his.  OMG one again, the show continued to keep the pace from the Pro's and hold their own as we enjoyed each performance.

Okay, what a night I witnessed that evening and I'm sure the others would agree.  The next morning we got up early (against my wishes) to join MAB again on Friday morning to have breakfast with his friends at BoJangles; and we even got KevMo to leave his computer to join us.  After breakfast  MAB took all of us to the "Musicians Hall of Fame" and we had a great time going through that place.  After that MAB took us to one of his favorite restaurants called "Morelli's' which was designed for guests to sit at large tables with others to meet and greet and pass the food back and forth.  I heard MAB mention this place before but I have to admit the food was fantastic and the opportunity to meet new people was much easier than I first imagined.  I have to go back there again.

There is more to conclude our trip but I'll save it for another post or keep it to myself.  It truly depends on how many beers are left downstairs in the fridge.

Okay, I have a few beers left so I will continue telling my story of my most recent Nashville trip.  On Friday morning after the fabulous Thursday Night MAB Birthday Bash, we got up early and traveled across town to meet Mab and his friends for breakfast.  Once we left there MAB put us in his new vehicle and drove us to the Nahville's "Mucians Hall Of Fame" and later took us to Morelli's his favorite Restaurant.   WHOA, STOP, WAIT RIGHT HERE.  Did any of you hear me, I said MAB took us to the Musicians Hall Of Fame and to his favorite restaurant Morelli's.  I hate to repeat myself again, as I have over the past several years; but how many of the Pro writers offering seminars and workshops offer to give the personal attention MAB does???   Note however, MAB just happen to have an opening in his schedule but he was willing to share his time with us.  I'll just say this on that matter, I've attending many seminar's and workshops by former "hit" songwriters; but after their workshops were over,  I never hear from them again until they held another workshop and invited me and others to attend once again for another fee of course.  Oh Well, so it is.

That Friday evening MAB invited us to join him and Tina to a show at 3rd and Lindsey's to hear a great group of Nashville studio musicians performing older classic Pop and Rock songs.  They were fantastic and performed the older songs so well; but after a couple of hours we were ready to leave and move on.  I hate to admit I left my credit card on the table and I didn't discover my mistake until traveling home and stopping for gas.   The next day I called my credit card company and went over the charges which were all mine.  We stopped any future charges and they will send me a new card with a new account number soon.  I'm sure the waitress turned my card in after we left and no attempt to make further charges were made (God bless her for that).  However; it was easier for me to cancel that card and request a new one, since I lived so far away from Nashville and it was not easy for me to stop my and pick my card up.

Saturday, the last day of our trip, we were all pretty worn out and chose to take it easy.  We enjoyed our coffee that morning and we knew MAB had flown out that day for a Tour with some friends to perform on the East  Coast.  Us old guys each took a nap in the afternoon and gathered for some drinks on the back deck that evening.   We  then packed our things and prepared to leave early the next morning.  It was a great trip and a great time for me to hang out  with my buddies KevMo and Philboy.

Thanks to MAB for taking the time to hang out with us and show us around Nashville the way he did.   Thanks also to KevMo and Philboy for putting up wih the Old Dog.  It was truly a great trip indeed.

Well OD, that is [almost] much better than I could tell the story! Thanks for the posts, and great recapping of the Thursday night show.

HOWEVER, if you're going to tell the story about, "I know where it is. I just don't know how to get there", at least get it right! First, the statement is perfectly legitimate. Do you know where the Empire State Building is? Have you ever been there, and do you know how to get there? ANYWAY, back to the story. It was FRIDAY afternoon, and we were sitting in the dining room at the house, trying to figure out how to get to 3rd and Lindsley for dinner with MAB and Tina that night. What I was trying to tell you was, I didn't know how to get there off of I40. The only time I had ever been there was coming down from Broadway on 3rd. I was not sure how to get there off of I40. Turns out, it wasn't that difficult at all. And, we actually got there early enough to get decent "free" parking in a public works parking lot.

Friday night was a great night also. The opening act still had about 20 minutes left when we got there, and they were pretty good. The featured act, (something vinyl?) was just awesome! They were going to play a 3 hour gig with no breaks! They played 60's and 70's tunes. Brought back a lot of memories!

Great recaps guys. Vinyl Radio was the groups name. Will do a response to all this, but it's great to hear you lay it out in such detail OD. Thanks for doing that. And Phil, always love to hear your imput on the shows. Did ya pick up anything new this trip?

MAB

Yes I did pick up something new MAB. You've got a great bunch of friends at BoJangles!!

Oh yes. One other thing I "picked up" was the lyric sheet and chord progression for, "Trying My Best To Live". THANKS AGAIN for that!! This is a very inspirational song that everyone can relate too, and I am determined to learn it. I'll be sure to video my version, which will track very close to yours, and once I get it down I will email the video to you, OD, and Kevin.

phil

You know MAB, in all seriousness, I did (re) learn a lesson about performing. NEVER be so arrogant as to think you can perform without first rehearsing the songs you plan to play! Not me anyway! We (kevin and I) did practice Tuesday and again Wednesday morning, so I did fine Wednesday. But, in contrast to OD's story, Kevin and I did NOT practice at all on Thursday. OD and I went to breakfast with you and the gang, and when we got back to the house, Kevin was busy with customers, and I just "wasn't in the mood" to practice. HENCE, the problems Thursday night.

I would like to give a BIG shout out to Kevin though. When I totally lost track in the middle of the first song, "Missing Link", Kevin caught it right away and stayed right there with me. THANK GOODNESS, he knew the first few words of the next line I had forgotten, and that got me back on track. THEN, unbeknownst to anyone, I missed half of the second verse of, "Run", but again Kevin was right there and figured it out and kept up with me. GREAT JOB KEVIN!! Thanks for being there for me!!

Phil,

Good observations.  Now I'm going to give you the "MAB ASSESSMENT." and some overview.

I know you didn't do a "tour" with me, because financially of course, you have limited funds. But on the times we've even gotten together, we have always worked with others, and have never had a lot of time just you and me and for me to give you some pointers. If you come back to Nashville, I think you need to plan on spending a little time with me ( I do hourly rates as well, and for you, we could do the "brother in law" price if you would just ask.) But you need to get some instruction on performing to help you smooth out what you are doing. When you have access to me (I came over there to help you guys out) you need to take advantage. Even if it is just to let me listen to what you are doing, I can be a big help.

You are are pretty physically fit guy. You are not overweight (wish I could say that), and are generally in pretty good shape for your age .Actually you are in pretty good shape for ANY AGE. I don't know if you go to the gym or work out at home but it shows. If you have ever really worked out, and built up, and then gotten away for a while, you develop something called MUSCLE MEMORY. This is where your muscles are used to exercise and will pick up where you left off. Why people who don't ever work out, (Me and OD), are lacking, is because we are not the most dedicated work out people.

But some people take NO TIME to drop weight and get buff. My friend Jason Gregory is that way. Always in good shape, he is now training for the IRONMAN triathelon so he runs, bikes, swims EVERYWHERE. He is RIPPED. But for a while he was not training every day. And he was STILL in good shape.

What is the BRAIN? THE BIGGEST MUSCLE in the human body. So practice should develop like that. If you practice year round, especially if you are doing the same songs, they should come to you IMMEDIATELY, in situations like BOBBY'S. And then I have to give you the TWO TYPES OF PRACTICE.

PRACTICE, WHEN YOU DO IT BY YOURSELF AT HOME.
REHERASAL, when you do it with others, and put the PRACTICE TO PRACTICAL APPLICATION.

I have been on you about playing all those open  mics and writers nights. And I know you do some of them. But every time we talk you always say "And there is this other one in ..... that I have been meaning to go to, but don't."
THE REASON YOU DO THOSE ARE IT'S REHEARSAL!!!!

Playing those half filled, nobody is paying attention, half the people doing cover songs is the VERY REASON YOU DO THAT! So you can get comfortable and play YOUR ORIGINAL MUSIC! That is the point. To BUILD UP for the BIG NIGHTS LIKE BOBBY'S, DOUGLAS, THE FLORABAMA, ETC. That is why you do that. Muscle Memory.

You still have a very erratic timing problem. You tend to jump measures in your approach, you get ahead and behind the beat and don't feel comfortable. Part of it is trying to pattern after the way we wrote particular songs. I use THE CHUNKY EIGHT NOTE FEEL on many of the songs I write. It is because of something called PROSODY.
If you think of the song BORN TO BE WILD, by STEPPENWOLF, you can see it.

"GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING" (da da da da da da da da)
HEAD OUT ON THE HIGHWAY" (da da da da da da da da)
LISTEN TO THE WIND                    (da da da da da da da da)
AND THE FEEIING COMING MY WAY (Dd da da da da da da )

That is called an "EIGTH NOTE FEEL." It is very common in "CAR, PLANE, TRAIN" TRANSPORTATION" songs because it mimics the movement. Also in the construction or demonstration of "TIME."

BOARD GAMES....(DA DA DA DA DA DA) WEARING OUT MY PHONE....."

"RUN!!!" DA DA DA DA ).....

Those songs are MOVEMENT SONGS. So a "chunky 8th note feel" denotes MOVEMENT.

This is what you need to get FLUID and SMOOTHER on. I think working with a metronome would help you get to this point. Also using your camera phone to record your performance while you rehearsal, would help.
You should also run through EACH SONG THREE TIMES BACK TO BACK. This will give you muscle memory on those songs. You need to NOT USE A MUSIC STAND, as that can trip you up as well. You are only doing three songs, and you have months to practice and rehearse those. So you need to get past the music stands completely.
Yes, I know other people use them, and so do I, if I am working on new songs. But I work on trying NOT TO LOOK at them any more than I absolutely have to.

This is the reason you get tripped up and forget words, which cause you to start, stop (didn't do that much this time) and be erratic in your delivery.

Another thing to do:
Go through a practice JUST PLAYING THE GUITAR. DON'T SING. Sing in your HEAD, but just work on the guitar with no vocals. Do that a couple of times. Then add the vocals.
Another thing I do, is in the SHOWER, or in the car, I often will JUST DO THE LYRICS. I will hear the music in my head but rehearse it like giving a speech. That way I can see how to BEND NOTES ,HOLD NOTES, or what I need to GET RID OF.

And that is another thing. I know you did some editing on our songs to eliminate extra words. But the truth be told, you might be able to cut another here and there and it might even be MORE COMFORTABLE.
And that is the TOTAL POINT. You need to be TOTALLY COMFORTABLE onstage. Only way to get there is DO IT A LOT, IN EVERY TYPE OF SITUATION.

Don't overlook coffee houses, small bars, libraries that might have songwriter or music events going on. Churches sometimes will have things like this. Now of course you don't have to do, PICK UP songs, but you should be writing a bunch of stuff. You need to be having songs for every situation.  Father's day, Valentine day, Christmas, Halloween. weddings, funerals, you are a writer. You should have something for anything.

And Kevin doesn't get away unscathed either. He was using lyric sheets even more. Of course he writes more songs ,but you guys are ONLY DOING THREE SONGS. So you should know them, and shouldn't HAVE to rehearse as much.

You guys did fine. But there is PLENTY OF ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. CAN'T REST ON YOUR LAURELS.

Every show is important. You never know who is in the audience And you get one chance to make a bad first impression.

So keep at it and always let me know what you need. I'm always around for you.

Thanks for the post.

MAB, thanks for that input! I edited your post down to the things I need to work on. Yes, I do like the chunky rhythm. BUT, I don't always do straight 1/8 chunks, and I know that. I will change the pattern to "change up", if that makes sense. BUT, like you said, I then get off beat by 1/4 - 1/2 a beat, and have to "slow down" or "speed up" to get back on beat. I do practice with the rhythm patterns on my Yamaha, and I do notice when I've "lost the beat". BUT, I realize I don't practice nearly enough with that.

The other issue I have, which you didn't mention, is my guitar playing skills, or lack there of. My wrist still is too stiff, and I tend to strum awkwardly and off beat, and that irritates me, in real time, and I loose concentration. Sometimes I DO just sit with my guitar and strum along with the rhythm on my Yamaha. But I don't do that nearly enough. Then of course there is always the "not fingering the chord correctly" syndrome. Or, playing the wrong chord and trying to recover.

The other thing I don't do nearly enough, is just practice only playing the guitar chord progression for songs. That is a great suggestion, and I will start doing more of that. Will probably help me with my chord changes, chord fingering, and strumming too.

As far as the lyric thing is concerned, my wife likes a lot of TV shows I don't particularly care one way or the other about. That is when I sit and go through the lyrics of a song I'm trying to work on. Then at bed time, I will go to sleep singing songs I'm working on.
BUT, I don't always do that "in rhythm". Those exercises are mostly to just remember the lyrics. I do work on the rhythm for certain phrases in the lyrics, but not the whole song.

All of these things are things I should be doing a lot of. But to tell the truth, I've always had a "concentration" problem. I either get bored and sidetracked, or I get frustrated and sidetracked. Since that is a 60+ YEAR problem, it's kind of hard to overcome! And of course, when the "fun" becomes more like "work", I will get lazy and quit! And the reality is, if you want to get better at anything, it IS WORK!! There's no getting around it!

I am probably beyond help at my age, but thanks for your help!! I will start trying some more of those concentrated exercises and see if that helps me.

Excellent reviews of everything that happened -- it was almost as good as being there.   I have been too busy to do a ramp wrap-up and now I am forgetting everything!

A note on music stands.  I mentioned to phil and OD in an email that I was a bit surprised at how many folks were using music stands.  Now phil didn't use lyric sheets at all.   I only used the music stand on Wednesday for phil's songs and they were only chord charts.   On Thursday I decided not to do one song and replaced it with one I hadn't done much lately, so I decided to use the lyric sheets for that song.   But Phil had everything memorized.

-- Kevin

Well wait Kevin! ALMOST had everything memorized. Remember Thursday night? And how you had to save me? That wasn't "everything memorized"!

Hey MAB, about your post. I've been sitting here practicing some songs for tomorrow night, and I actually did practice the same song 3 times back to back. Then I got to thinking. On one of my tours with you, we did go over performance and you had me pick 3 songs then had me play them three times each. I have gotten out of that habit. Need to get back into it again. I actually like to pick 4 or 5 songs to practice and have ready, just in case I decide on stage to change up my song selection for some reason. As a matter of fact, I believe we have gone over everything you suggested in your post, but I have not been following your advice very well. THANKS for reminding me again!!

Good posts guys. Phil, I apologize to you for my music stand comments. You are absolved. In the future, don't let Kevin drag you down into his mental abyss. Kevin, actually the thing you mentioned about so many people using music stands is one of my PET PEEVES about how LAZY people have gotten here. I watch these performers come in over and over and over, doing the SAME SONGS EACH WEEK at places like BOBBY'S and they STILL HAVE THE MUSIC STANDS UP.
AND THEIR MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE IT. Robotic, sounds like they are reading the lyrics (they are), and no passion or any real connection with their own music. If THEY CAN'T CONNECT, HOW DO THEY EXPECT AN AUDIENCE, RECORD COMPANY OR PUBLISHERS TO CONNECT?

It is one of the current problems I have seen for many years in this town. The new people coming in have VERY LITTLE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING. It is a symptom of the FACEBOOK/SOCIAL MEDIA world we live in. There is no craft, in the writing or performing of the songs, no connection with audiences, even having songs that are far removed from any sort of entertainment at all.

I always hate to say the old "Back in my day..." thing, but GEEEEZZZZZEEE There is such a difference in the past 10 years and the preceeding generations. Even where people USED lyric sheets (my friend and the late great KIM WILLIAMS, always had them with him. But Kim had health problems and medication he took sometimes affected his memory, so he had to. But he still had a PASSION in those huge hits for Garth Brooks, and others. And of course, it is pretty fun when someone forgets a lyric and the WHOLE CROWD sings it out!

Even my friend and mentor Jimbeau Hinson will forget some words sometimes, he has his wife Brenda as a teleprompter, but he powers through. And that is what you have to do.

So guys, just remember, you've been MABBED!!! From now on, LEARN YOUR SONGS and leave the music stand to other less qualified writers. Let them look bad. You don't have to!

Off to Alabama to start work on my Mother's house and personal effects. She passed away last month and there are a lot of details to attend to. Everyone have a good day and thanks for getting some activity over here.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?

Hey folks, thought I'd try to get some conversation reinvigerated here. When it gets football season, I like to pull put a couple of my football songs, to demonstrate some of the things I do in my career. My job is to TEACH songwriting BY EXAMPLE AND DOING. I do it with my "WRITE UP" songwriting lessons, and try to SHOW people directions they can take their songs. This is one example.

STACY YOUNG, is a woman out of KANSAS CITY MO. Where she was for years a SUGAR BROKER. Actually a "SUGAR MAMA!!!" LOL! She worked the part well, being VERY ATTRACTIVE and could really get people to buy sugar, selling to large companies, resturants, etc. She would combine work and pleasure, with making trips into Nashville. This was up until she got into a wreck which hurt her back and had to take time to heal.
But one of her trips we were working on songs and she wanted to write something about "husbands who completely ignore their wives during football season.

Her version was really COMPLAINING about the situation and since I don't do negative, I felt there could be a much more interesting and fun way to approach the subject. Since at the same time, a lot of my friends were doing  the FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM thing, I put the two together and took it in the direction of the wife using her "special skills" to keep the husband interested.

A while after we wrote and recorded a demo on it she made a connection which took  her to THE SOUTHERN SIRENS, which are a three piece all female group out of LOUISVILLE KY. I think they did a great video and job on the song. Hope you like it.
