Phillip (phil g.) Grigg

I will be there on the 7th so I can attend the last volunteer meeting and get my schedules and shirt. PLUS, a great dinner from Barb and Felix!! There is a "kick-off party" on Wednesday where a lot of the local folks perform, and usually a few Nashville folks show up early. I'll probably be at the Flora-Bama Thursday to help welcome everyone. If Riley get's there Thursday I'll probably be out on the breezeway jamming with him and friends. See ya then!

BTW MAB, who all may be coming down with you?

phil

Marc-Alan Barnette
Phil,

To be honest, I don't know. At this point, nobody. Janet and Charles are not coming this year as they have had to cut back on their travel. Susie of course, passed away in June. Tommy has said he would come down but with the work schedule he has going on (not to mention the hospital and doctor bills he is having to pay, I don't know). Tina talks about some of her work friends coming down, but again, I have to see that to believe it. A bunch of people claim they are going to go, but you never know till they are actually in the living room.

I don't have to remind you that the reason I call OD a "ping pong ball" is because he usually changes his mind between 10 and 20 times before he decides what he will do. About the last five years he has been "yes and no" ing, up until he actually leaves or doesn't. So you never know with him.

It is always hard to tell what is going to happen. Always been that way about this festival. Most everything stays up in the air until the last minute and things change even when we are down there. I usually get my place and then just see what happens. I long ago quit trying to predict who was coming, where I'd be playing, who I'd be playing with, what much of anything was going to happen. After about 25 years with this festival you realize that the only time you can tell what you are going to do is AFTER you've done it.

But, I imagine Tina and I will be there. Pretty much know that one.

MAB
Phillip (phil g.) Grigg

So MAB, are you coming down on Thursday then? Since there is no schedule, and usually not one until about the middle of October, don't you usually just come on down the first day? I should be at the Flora-Bama Thursday afternoon to greet you. Maybe I'll talk to Linda and see if she can make me a "special" "Rhody" pass so I can carry your guitar(s) in when you play the Flora-Bama main room!

Speaking of OD, he seems pretty set, so far, on not coming down because of possibly catching a bug on the plane or while there. BUT, I gave him some alternate options where he doesn't have to go down all in one day, and could split up flying and driving, or just make it a 2 day drive; Day 1 to Nashville, and day 2 to FB! The only problem will be housing. He doesn't really want to stay at the Phoenix, but he certainly could. I'm sure we could upgrade to a 2 or 3 BR. Kevin and I can easily chauffer him around!

See ya in about 4 weeks!!

phil

Marc-Alan Barnette
Hey Phil,

Yes, we will be there on Thursday. We usually get in mid afternoon, and then most of the time, get together with friends, at Mikey's for dinner. I rarely do anything on Thursday's as we're always pretty worn from the drive. And usually we've had pretty full days and evenings the night before. I usually don't even make check in at the Bama till Fiday. First day is usually settling in, grocery shopping, etc.

This trip I have to make a stop in Birmingham to visit my Mother's house and make sure things are okay there. She passed away July 4th, so I have to check on things every time I pass through.
In Alabama, you have to wait 180 days before you can start dispersing benefits, sell houses, or anything, so it will be December before I can legally do much of anything. Actually you are not even supposed to take anything out of the house, furniture, etc. even if you are giving to relatives, because anything could be an asset and if there were any liens, etc, they would have to be attached.
There is a still a lot of stuff there, clothes, pictures, momentos, furniture, etc. Although I am setting up to let Logan and family members have a lot of it.

So while we will get in on Thursday, you probably won't see us out till Friday. Usually they have Jimbeau and I pretty booked up. We normally have Friday, Saturday and Sunday shows and Jimbeau usually takes a break for a couple of days. I normally play Monday, then hopefully we will have the TWISTED CHRISTMAS show with Randy Brooks, on Wed. Then Jimbeau and I usually pick back up on Thursday, play Friday and most of the time an early show on Saturday. We normally drive home after that.

I usually go on the FBSIF web site, check my schedule about two weeks before, and put it on Facebook and my own sites. Even then, they often change, and I'll get down there and find they have moved me around. So I'm just flexible. You have to be on this.

OD is usually back and forth until the First Friday. Then he makes his decision. This year I doubt hell come down, but he knows he can stay with us always. He;s been going through some medical issues and I think this year he has other things he wants to get done. His birthday was yesterday. He is 66.

So that is the update for now. Will let you know when I know something.

MAB

Thanks MAB! I did not realize yesterday was OD's birthday! I'll have to send him a special email!

FRANK BROWN SONGWRITER'S FESTIVAL schedule,

Hey folks. Well, the Frank Brown festival schedule is up on the web site and I said I'd come around when I knew what mine is. So here it is for now. Remember the schedule can STILL (and usually does) change. There are cancellations, venues drop out at the last minute, etc. so keep in mind and check in with the FBSIF web site often.

For now, we start off on the first Thursday. I usually don't have a show on Thursday, but this one is with RANDY BROOKS, (Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer) and will be our "TWISTED CHRISTMAS" show. It's at the "Outra Coastal", which is a new venue, that I've not been to before. Will be doing that one a couple times. The rest will be myself and Jimbeau. This year, for now, we'll be doing the weekends, but I expect to have a couple more come in before it's over. I usually play about nine times during the festival (have done 15 one year) and I'll also be at the OPEN MIC at the FLORABAMA during the days. Anyone wanting to perform, should be there around lunch time each day and sign up.

So there you go, Phil and Kev. The festival countdown is officially ON!

SO, sounds like your Thursday plans may have changed! I guess you will check-in Thursday afternoon after all!

Hey, I think you mean the "Intracoastal" in Orange Beach? See ya there! Guess I'll be at the Intracoastal also!! Always enjoy checking out new venues. Hope they have [good] food!

phil

Marc-Alan Barnette
Phil,

Possibly, but probably not. I don't have to sign in, and when we get in, we go directly to the Regatta, where I've stayed for the past 12 years. That is on the corner of 59 and the beach highway, and by the time we get in it will be probably time to drop off clothes and go to the gig. So I'll still probably check in on Friday.
I copied down the name Tina gave me so I'll make sure it is the right venue.

Ok, guys......guess what!? I have a question. Hypothetical
what if you have a song that is sort of rock/pop and someone in that genre wants to record it. In todays country it could even be released as a country song. Could someone in different genres release the same song at the same time? Or do you have to let one release theirs and then the second one could release in their genre afterward?

Thanks Peggy
Marc-Alan Barnette
Hey Peggy, welcome back.

It would be a good problem to have but probably would not happen enough to be concerned with. I can think of two instances in the past fifty years. Other than that it might be a situation where one artist recorded something, then it became a STANDARD, and done over and over again. Something like WIND BENEATH MY WINGS, and of course YESTERDAY have been recorded sometimes hundreds of times. McCartney's YESTERDAY is the most recorded song ever with over 600 versions of it.

The "songs released in different genres' at the same time, have happened, but not often. Usually it is the result of different marketing. In the early 1990's a song called "BLACK VELVET" was a number one rock hit on a Canadian artist, ALANNYA MILES. IT was a big hit, and almost at the same time, another version on an artist named ROBIN LEE was released in America. The record company of the first hit, ATLANTIC was not really happy about that, and there was a legal fight. But both songs did pretty well and are still heard on classic radio. The Alannya Miles version was more pop and the Robin Lee version was more country. Different record companies will also have different ideas, particularly in different countries. Some think it expands a song's viability, but others will tell you it shortens both of them. I tend to fall into that category. Here's a break down on that one:

In America, in 1997, there was a song called "HOW DO I LIVE WITHOUT YOU" written by Dianne Warren, got into another odd situation. IT was recorded by LEANNE RHYMES to be included in the Nicholas Cage Movie CON AIR. After it was recorded, Touchstone pictures (Disney) decided she sounded too young to really inhabit the song, and had another version done by TRISHA YEARWOOD. Trisha's version was on the movie soundtrack, and Leanne's was the hit single. Both did very well. But in the minds of some, again cancelled each other out.

I don't know of anyone that would do that in this day and age, at least not at the same time. There are too many people involved, different publishers, record labels, promotional people, etc. involved. And of course, now in the INTERNET age, if you get one cut on a song you are doing amazingly well.

You might do a GOOGLE search, go to YOU TUBE, and type in "MULITPLE VERSIONS OF POPULAR SONGS." It will probably give you a lot of examples over the years. And then you can pull up wikapedia or other resources and find out about each song.

Our landscape is far different now. Where once you could have "STANDARDS" where one person would record a popular song and then dozens of versions of that song would come out. In the 50's and 60's, you might have DEAN MARTIN sing "EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY SOMETIME", and then all his buddies, Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. Tony Bennett, etc. would all record the same thing. Was cool and songwriters would benefit vastly.

That changed so much with the Internet and the plummenting value of songs. Now singers are more likely to feel like "I'VE RECORDED THAT, NO ONE ELSE CAN NOW!!" or "So and so has recorded it so I don't want to do it!" It's a different era and everyone wants their own PROPRIETARY STAMP on a song. Some songs do go on to be performed a lot, usually becoming KARAOKE STANDARDS, but you just don't find that many major artists that record multiple versions of a song, particularly at the same time.

There are always "TRIBUTE" versions, like the 1994 "COMMON THREAD, the songs of the EAGLES" done by multiple artists, which played a part in bringing the Eagles back  together. I am waiting to see the BIG TOM PETTY tribute that is going to no doubt be out soon.

But there is NOTHING wrong with having songs recorded in multiple versions. I have done that quite a few times. Sometimes if you do it one way and it doesn't work, you might try it in another version. Here's an example:

Frank Myers and Gary Baker wrote a song called "I SWEAR" back in the mid 80's. They intended it for a pop version, and had a very jazzy, piano vocal form on the demo. They pitched for years and got no where on it. After four or five years and hundreds of pitches, getting nothing. They even forgot about the song. About 7 years later, they were reviewing their song catelog and someone found an old cassette copy of the song they had completely forgotten about.
They went back and re-recorded the song country, and almost immediately got it recorded by country singer JOHN MICHEAL MONTGOMERY, and then it went to number one.
Almost at the same time, a pop vocal "boy band" named "ALL 4 ONE" recorded the same song and it became a HUGE worldwide HIT in the pop category. The same way they had origionally intended it to be recorded.  here's the story of that one:

So all in all, yes it has happened. It could again, but I would find it very doubtful. You have to remember these were all over 20 years ago. A lot has changed since then. But you just never know.

Good to hear from you Peggy.

THE QUEEN OF ROCKIN' BLUES!!!!!!

One of my favorite bands were always LITTLE FEAT! I have a lot of those grooves and rhythms in my music from that band. And I really loved the SECOND incarnation of the band, that featuered this MONSTEROUS singer named SHAUN MURPHY!!! She was this powerhouse vocalist that rocked everything she touched.

I really got into her and then found out she also sang with BOB SEEGER, and TONS of monster artists. But she was the killer on everything she was close to.

WHAT A SOULFUL VOICE!!!

A few years back, I was lucky to sing with a LITTLE FEAT TRIBUTE BAND named BIG SHOES, for a bit and through them, I actually got to MEET HER!!! I must admit I was a bit star struck. She was as good live as she was on record. Very rare.

A couple years after that I met her again at a MUSIC STARTS HERE, get together and she mentioned she might be interested in writing with me.

WOAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

(TOLD YOU GUYS TO GO TO THOSE EVENTS!!!!)

A couple weeks after that....BOOM!!!! She's at my house and we were actually writing. The God's smiled on us that day and we came up with "OUT OF MY OWN WAY" a tribute to all of us , particularly players who sometimes are our own worst enemies. She had a monster line:

"I've been beat up, I've been kicked down,

But I don't stay down for long

Ain't a problem I can;t overcome

And come back twice as strong!"

Man, that summed it up! I was so excited to be working with this legend, I wanted to play it everywhere. But sometimes you have to wait, and make sure it's right.

WELL TODAY IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!!!

I got my copy of her CD, MIGHTY GATES, with our song on it at the NUMBER TWO track!

I'm very excited about it and would love all my buds to go check her out! If you like my "R&B flavored stuff, you;re gonna love this! She knocks it out of the park!!!

Thank you Shaun!!!!!! Loved it!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL!

Hey everybody. MAB here just to let you know I'm still around if anyone needs me. During Nov.-Dec. Nashville slows down a lot due to the end of year music business, so there is not a lot going on. So if anyone has questions or comments, now would be a good time for me to respond.

I haven't been here a lot because no one else seems to be here. Eddie is off dealing with all these disasters around the world and many people are just into their own lives or have moved on.
I do want to say that Janice Starudob, from Winnipeg, Canada is battling Cancer and having a rough time of things. So I always want to wish her the best.

I hear from people from time to time, Dianne Gee, OD, Kevin and Phil, but most everyone else has sort of faded from view. In many ways this is normal. Most web sites ebb and flow with their activity, and people find other outlets for their passions or life just gets in the way.

Always know that I am your friend and happy to always help in any way I can. Good luck to you all and best wishes to you and your families.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!

Well MAB, yes, I've sort of "moved on". I'm busy these days "doing it". I usually play at least one open mic a week. Next week I may try one right down the street from me. The problem with it is it doesn't start until 10pm and they allow smoking there. It is a very small venue without a stage and very noisy. Haven't been writing much. Kevin and I did kind of write a song at Frank Brown. But, he took what I started and went off in a direction I wasn't interested in. So, he wrote his song, and after I got back home, I wrote my song. It's all good though.

Hey MAB! Before I forget to tell you, I will be in Nashville March 13-16. I emailed Jalinda, and I have a 10:45 slot in their Thursday writers night. I couldn't believe how filled up it is through March! And it's not even Christmas! Glad to see they are doing so well there. I also plan to play Cathy's open mic at Flora-Bama Monday night, Gary's open Mic in Franklin Tuesday night, and Sam's Jam's Wednesday afternoon. Right now I'll come home on Friday, unless you have something going on that night.

Marc-Alan Barnette
Hey Phil,

Good to hear from you ,glad you are still at it. Always nice to see people lasting past the three year mark. Doak Turner Bonnie Lee Panda are all leaving town, Doak on Sunday, Bonnie Lee next week, Alice Bargeron, about a month ago. So it is hard to maintain enthusiasm and energy, no matter where you are.

Having multiple versions of songs is pretty normal. Scott Southworth and I have nearly totally different versions of our song. "the Hard Way." The reasons are easy to see. His Dad and Mother said things to him, and mine said things to me, their "advice for life," We started laundry listing that thing and if we put them all in, it would have rivaled American Pie.
And our different versions reflected the way we each speak. So both are good, and we both recorded our own version, his for his CD, mine for mine and we take turns playing them out when we play out. I did my version last Friday at the Bluebird, so it will be his turn next time.

Glad you are coming back in March, but I wonder why you wouldn't wait a couple weeks and come back during Tin Pan South. That would be the best time to see a lot of great people play. As far as performing, most of those same shows will be going. I don't know about the Tuesday thing, as Gary is no longer hosting that one at Kimbros. Don't know what happened but I know he said he no longer does it.

Like everything you have to check in with everyone close to it. We never know when the lease is going to end at Bobby's and considering all the things building up around there, I expect the axe to drop pretty much any time. The 16th Ave. area is totally being redone, some for the good, some for the not so good, but it is changing. I don't know how long Lizard will be hanging in. It is just a hobby place for him anyway.
But as long as he keeps going, I guess we will.

One of my things next year is to back off somewhat of my overall performing. I get kind of bored playing the same places. I've had to start turning down some things. I have also gone to a once every OTHER week thing with Sam on Wed. Might be going to less in the new year.

My big thing next year will be my 60th Birthday show on July 20th. It's going to be a celebration of my music, and will be done full band with horns and everything. I won't be doing the songwriter stuff this year. It will be all R&B and the full up versions I've always wanted. Have been reserving my band members and just have to find the right venue. A lot of stuff is already booked, so I may have to rent a place. An option is WORLD MUSIC, which is very close to me.
I want to video the entire show and put parts of it up on YOU TUBE and my web site.

Also, the beginning of the year will have me selling my Mother's house and being completely out of Birmingham, which I've really wanted for a long time. I'm not moving back and just don't need the house. The really cool part is finding my old IBANEZ LES PAUL, which was so great after missing it for forty years. I hope to have it put back together soon.

Has been a very busy Christmas season with a ton of parties and performances. My Son graduates college tomorrow and so the kids are all taken care of and grown. So we keep moving on.

Good to hear from you all and have a great holiday season.

MAB
Phillip (phil g.) Grigg

Well MAB, I deliberately chose that week so I could AVOID tin pan south. I just don't want to deal with the crowd. I realize I could "go see" some great writer shows. But, that's just it. I would just "go see". I want to go "be part of". I don't need the Tin Pan South week to do that. I have decided my musical journey will never go any further than me being a small part of the scene. I can come up there and be part of that any time. I am very appreciative of Janet allowing me to be part of her writers night. But I'm perfectly content to come up and just play open mics. Just the chance to mingle with other writers that can appreciate original music more than it is here.

I'm not too concerned about Bobby's idol hour yet. I still have faith it will be kept as a landmark. But I do appreciate the heads up about Richards in Franklin. I guess I should contact Gary and find out what is going on there. If not there, Barbara still has her open mic on Tuesday nights. But I guess all of this is part to the problem making plans so far in advance. Any one or all of those places could be gone by March 13. HAVE FAITH!!

I'll keep in touch as time gets closer. OD has hinted he may even come down. We'll see.

Happy New Year Everybody,

I needed to start the new on a somber note. JANICE STARODUB, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, the woman who I consider one of the most successful that I have worked with, who was here for a while, then moved on to developing and managing several successful Canadian artists, passed away New Years Eve.
She was an amazing woman, who embodied all the things you have to have in order to navigate this industry. Undying spirit, dynamic personality, having huge impact on everyone they meet, endless energy and optimism. She was it.

I was proud to know and work with her. I will miss her.

Love ya girl.
