Hey gang! We need to start talking about the 2016 Ramp Bash. There is a special thread for it right under "Forums". Check it out. Looks like it will be May 8-15 in Nashville. It would be great if we could get some of us here to attend. Last years bash was a lot of fun! Really cool GETTING OUT OF THE LIVING ROOM and meeting some of the ramp members. So, come on gang.

What ya say?

I truly enjoyed myself the last time but this year my brother Robert and I have prior commitments. We are putting on a local free concert. It's a start.

Hi folks,

I'm headed out of the country for a few days. For Wes, Justin, and others trying to figure out all of this, you have to do research on the overall business. These are some of the actual issues we all face in trying to do this. While Texas has been able to avoid a lot of them, I don't know that they will be able to do forever. This kind of lays out a lot of the complications and issues we have been looking out for years. Any one that is trying to get music "out there" need to be aware of these. Don't get bogged down in it, just understand what it is. Sort of like going into an area where there are dangerous animals. You know they are there and beware of them. Obey the rules of the place and you will be better off.

Hi Mr Westwood, well putting my old 86 635i back on the road after a respray, no other car at the moment , sad having to use a non service transport system....

Re current trends, well I dont care or worry about them per se, the new trends are already locked in or not available to write against, just try to write the best song I can and even gulp horror just suggested doing a wrap bridge on the Lyric forum to one of my songs...
Also think if you write enough songs you will get your volume up of the 98% of popular girl boy thingy songs LOL It is all about writing songs.

That noted, I still have experienced 100's of writers who become "booty hurt" over even the most constructive critique. They don't realize that even though someone compliments their writing and means well, they really aren't helping the writer to better their music or their skills. Which is why 9 out of 10 lyrics posted on a lot of these sites is of very poor quality. More poem than lyric. Lacks structure, rhyme scheme, story line, syllable counts, a decent hook, and many of the other things that are important to writing a good song. And that includes me too. Even after all of these years, I struggle daily with coming up with something that is new, refreshing and covers all the basics.

But then there is a second side to that. Even if someone comes in here or the lyric forums on other sites, works hard to develop their writing, and puts their best foot forward, it is only a matter of time before they learn the truth from people with experience in the business. And the truth is, there is no future for them in the business. Even if they are talented, sing well, play well, write well, the odds are still stacked against them. And the fact is, most of them are just lyricists and/or porch pickers like me. I've had too many people than I can count tell me that they quit coming in and writing just because they read through these forums and everything was absolutely designed to discourage by giving them honest, true advice. It's a double edge sword.

Just wrote a song a couple of days ago with the title threading needles. I have been saying for years I am 10 yards from the haystack, trying to thread a needle...

I am here with my eyes open, I do not doubt my chance infinesimaly small, dont have the relationships, havent got to Nashville yet and probably althogh I attempt to write to Nashville sensibilities I do not hit it all the time (repeat - write enough songs) and had a NSAI review which said I sounded like Pink Floyd! what a pat on the back that was lol

SO I am under no illusion, and like the idea of striving for something that wont be given to me on a plate and may not be given to me at all. The human condition is struggle. Respect is given by me to people who go on climb the mountain break the four minutes take on the champ and I have made some great friends in music whom would have been unavailable otherwise.

Re the story about the BASS song (fingers down a blackboard to me) but have had heard this being covered in the old folk open mic, but they play Mustang Sally regulary as well!

Funny thing this week got banned from my long time pub (long sad story that one) but was listening to old recordings and I astounded how much the songs have changed over the years, really suprised. Could only say this must be something from playing to people and seeing reactions to what they liked, suppose.

Thanks for the link Kevin!! I bookmarked that site and the Billboard site they had a link to. Now, I can see what is popular in multiple genre's and not just country.

Saw Wags make it out last night at a show I did at the Maxwell House. Glad to see  him. He is doing well and in the studio with a new song and singer he is working with. He does read along yet not always is able to comment.

Thanks for coming out Wags.

Thanks for the update MAB. Good to hear Wags is doing so good.

Went up to Subway for lunch today. Heard the new Luke Bryan song, "Fishin', Huntin',and Lovin Every Day". It's a kind of swampy, bluegrass, country sound with great lyrics. Here's a link if you're interested.

Hi Phil ! We spent the night in the villages, ran into Carol last night and spent some time with her. She's our kind of people. Her and my wife hit it off and exchanged ph #'s. We actually had met Carol a couple of years back. She had walked by our table and my wife complimented her dress and struck up a conversation.

I would have given you a shout but this visit was unplanned. We came down to Daytona for my wifes mothers memorial service. She passed on 2/29 and was 87 her wishes were to be cremated and buried in Daytona.

Hey Dan! Sorry to hear about your loss. A little prayer for your healing.

It's O.K. (this time) I missed you. I really cant afford going out this month anyway. But, I hope you guys enjoy your stay! Glad you got to run into Carol again.

Phil,
just had a look at the lyric sheet for the Luke Bryan song,

It was Interesting second verse which I didn’t find as strong as the first necessarily but he included a triplet rhyme to maintain /strengthen  it,
In V1 he has a AABCCB perfect rhyme structure then in V2 he maintains this sort of with a variation of AAB (C)CCB but the rhymes are not all perfect
Includes ‘Mercury’ on L2 to go with “Me’ and ‘Tree’
“Buzz’ and ‘backing up’
‘Two stroke’ and ‘Go’

Works so much better than all perfect rhyme in my opinion – after the VCVC of country writing the short chorus/ refrains with additions are 101 POP structures, sort of shows where it’s all headed LOL

"Huntin', Fishin' And Lovin' Every Day"
If I could make a livin' from walkin' in the woods
You can bet I'd be sittin' pretty good
High on a hill looking at a field down wind
If I could make a nickel off of turnin' them bass
Never worry bout the price of gas
I'd be wheelin' and dealin' and sittin' there reelin' 'em in

Huntin', fishin', and lovin' every day
That's the prayer that a country boy prays
Thank God He made me this way
Huntin', fishin', and lovin' every day
Early in the mornin', late in the evenin'
I'm getting red dirt rich and Flint River paid
Huntin', fishin', and lovin' every day

I get a little farm pond buzz
Sound of gravel when I'm backin' up
Pullin' the string on a 9.9 two-stroke (Mercury)
I love it when my baby wants to roll with me
Throws her boots on, climbs in a tree
Tuckin' her hair in my hat and she's ready to go

And we get to huntin', fishin' and lovin' every day
That's the prayer that a country boy prays
Thank God He made me this way
Huntin', fishin' and lovin' every day
Early in the mornin', late in the evenin'
I'm getting red dirt rich and Flint River paid
Huntin', fishin' and lovin' every day

So while y'all are up there
Breathin' in that old dirty air
I'll be down here
Knee-deep in the Muckalee

Huntin', fishin' and lovin' every day
I wanna see them tall pines sway
Y'all close them eyes, let's go there in our minds

Huntin', fishin', and lovin' every day
That's the prayer this country boy prays
Thank God He made me this way
Huntin', fishin' and lovin' every day
Black coffee in the mornin, dark whiskey in the evenin'
I'm gettin' red dirt rich and Flint River paid
Huntin', fishin' and lovin' every day

Won't you come along with me
Won't you come along with me
I know you wanna see
Huntin', fishin', and lovin' every day

Where and how is Ottluk

I knew Ott had ongoing health issues but I hadnt realised he was MIA . My excuse .. I m just flitting in and out at the moment. I have a LOT of stuff to do off line at the moment.
We should all keep track of each other

There are lots of folk from this particular  forum that seem  to be MIA too.  I thought OD was coming back  but I havent seen  him.

Unfortunately I just saw a post over at JPF where it said Ott passed away today.    I didn't even know he was sick.  He was a passionate man about his art and music in general.  He will be missed around here (and many other places), for sure.   He somehow found the time to comment and encourage every poster to the open mic section!

Ott Luck- RIP 2016

Ott was an interesting fellow. No matter what happened in any writing career, the biggest thing is PARTICIPATION and he did that in many ways. Did his contests, participated in many threads here, was good at commenting on people's songs, and kept a healthy output of songs. I hope his family appreciate his efforts and hang on to those.

He and I always got a bit at loggerheads, as I wanted him to get out  of the living room and meet some writers face to face. I helped mentor a group in his hometown of Minneapolis and we did shows, seminars, and other things and I tried many times to get him out to meet people. Would have very much enjoyed meeting him in person, but he may have had health or other reasons he didn't want to do that, and I understand. He never mentioned it, and I never asked. I reach out when I can and don't want to bother people if they don't respond. He just never seemed interested in that and I understand that.

Ott was active in many places. He made useful comments and provided food for thought to many people. All are much richer for having had a dialogue with him. I hate that we were never aware of his health situation as I would have liked to let him know we cared about him. But these things happen. Too bad we often never let people know things while they are alive.

So I salute and remember Ott Luck. Will have a little drink and toast today at Bobby's Idle hour. If anyone knows of any information on him, please post it here. Would like to send a note to his family if there are any contact info.

Here's a link to his obituary, it allows you to leave comments if you like.

Cheers Ott, Rest in peace my friend.

This is sad news. I always liked Ott. He had some pretty good tunes on open mic. He always had something good to say about any song he commented on, including all of my songs. He will be missed here. RIP Ott!

If anyone does know Ott on a more personal level, and if his family wouldn't mind, please post some contact for them here so we can send condolences.

Phil,

Click on Ott's picture above and it will take to a guest book where you can leave condolences.  I see a few rampers chimed in.   It has been a tough year so far.
Thanks Kevin!

In my off-line discussions with Ott, I learned that he had a very young daughter.  I think she is in her teens.  I'm sure all our thoughts and prayers go out for her in particular.

Ott shared his medical story with me, awhile back. He was suffering from Cancer.  It fucking sucks.

I asked him to moderate a forum.  Here was his response:

Unfortunately, Eddie, I can't take over as moderator of the Poet's Corner. I don't want you thinking I am unwilling to contribute to the site, so here is the reason: I have been fighting an esophageal cancer for over a year, with numerous operations, radiation, and chemo. I just started another course of chemo this week. I just do not have the physical or psychic energy to do it. Please keep my condition to yourself. Thanks for the offer! Ott

I guess he won't mind me sharing this, now.

R.I.P. Ott. He was a good guy and I liked him a lot. So sorry to hear he passed.

Wow, the news about Ott is a bit of a shocker. Had no idea he had been ill.  Very sorry to hear of his passing. Didn't know him well but he was a good writer, was straightforward in his talk and a major contributor here at the ramp.
His presence will be missed.

RIP  Ott
