Eddie Rhoades
OD,
I enjoy teasing you almost as you enjoy teasing the Kid. This past weekend I performed Love Stinks in a talent show in Western North Carolina. I didn't win first place this time. I need to start practicing up getting ready for FB.

Eddie R,  I have made plans with Philboy to attend FB this year and share a beach front Condo together, in the same Condo Building MAB will be staying in.

I will announce Philboy is a better man than me because he intends to be involved in the Festival and continue volunteering his time serving lunches at the Florabama. I can only use the excuse I am too lazy to get involved.  I can't use the excuse I'm too old because both you and Philboy have a few more years, a few more past girlfriends, a few more drive-in movies, and a few more high school sock hops under your belts that me.

I will look forward to hearing you play at the open mics and enjoy your music while sipping on a Bushwacker.

Are you guys getting a 2-bedroom or 3-bedroom condo?   I really need to make it to one of those FB things before I get too, too old and forget how to drive!
OD OldDog

KevMo,

We will certainly get a 3 bedroom in case someone wants to join us.   Come on down and spend as much time as you'd like.  Also be aware;  I know you're a bit accident prone, so be carefull down on the beach if you choose to go swimming.  Please know there are No lifeguards and if the Old Dog sees you in trouble (from my balcony) I would be too slow to get to you in time, plus I'd be out of breath anyway once I reached the water.

Also; in the rare chance you go swimming and are attacked by a shark (which have never been spotted in that area; but we are dealing with KevMo here), and we never see you again............... can I have your guitar???   Ha!!!

How about my banjo?

When you go to book it, find out how much the deposit is and I will send along my share (or my banjo).

OD, can I assume you will be the grown up this time? When I talked to MAB, he said he would get there Thursday, Nov. 3rd. But, I don't know if he has a show that night? Also, we didn't discuss how long he would be staying this year. Since I still want to volunteer for a few days in the kitchen, I would need to know what days we will be there. Any number of days is fine with me. So my plan, right now, is to go over the same day you fly in or, MAYBE a day early, depending on your flight schedule, then leave the same day you fly out. I just need to not volunteer for some day I won't be there.

Will be totally awesome if Kevin can join us for a few days!!

Awe Mercy Philboy, you are asking the Old Dog to be the re.....respon......reponsibile adult on this trip???  Holy Crap.

I haven't even unpacked from our last trip yet, I just got caught up on the naps I missed out on during our week in Nashville, I don't even know if I've caught up on my meds yet.  How can I be trusted to be the responsible one???  My big project for today was to empty the melted ice from my cooler.  That alone wore the Old Dog out and caused another nap; how can I be be trusted to stay awake and make plans for our future trips???

Holy Crap, I just checked my emails and fell asleep reading the 3rd one on the page.  I haven't even bothered to answer the first two emails yet, I've totally forgotten who the 3rd email was even from.  Your asking me to be responsible and take care of FB arrangements.  Holy Crap???   What was the name of that Condo again???  Is FB in Florida or Georgia???   What time zone is that in and do they have a phone booth I can make a collect call from???

S.O.B.  This is a lot of information for the Old Dog to comprehend and have to deal with.  What about my yard???  Will I have to mow before I leave or can I put it off until I get back???  S.O.B.  All of these decisions are getting difficult.  What about trash pickup???  What day do they pick up trash again???  Do I set it out before I leave or wait until I get back a week later???   What if the neighborhood vermits get into it???   Will the trash company pick up the mess or will they leave it on the ground for me to pick up when I get home.  About getting home???  What day will I be getting home again???  Will it be in the AM or PM???   What airline flight will that be, I'll have to let Brother Blake know so he can pick me up at the airport.

S.O.B.  How much beer is left in the fridge???  What time does Russell's Drive Thru close tonight???   S.O.B. Philboy,  are you sure you want to leave the Old Dog in charge???

YES OD!! I AM SURE!! YOU are in charge. MAN UP! As I recall you made it through boot camp. This little task is MUCH EASIER than dealing with your drill Sargent. And, Remember! The GIRL that makes the reservations at the condo (Which by the way I REALLY DO NOT know the name) is one of the girls you "love BEST". So, it should even be a positive, pleasurable experience for you! YOU CAN DO THIS!! I TRUST YOU!!

Hey Phil and OD,

Now understand that my plans always develop the closer we get to the  festival. They almost ALWAYS have some cancellation that they need filled and try to pull me in on playing on Thursday night. But I really don't want to do that, because we get down, relax and usually see a show somewhere. We usually have several people all getting in at around the same times, Susie, Tommy, Larry and Beckett, Jalinda and Charles, and usually a few other all tend to arrive and I have to be around to get them in. Some, like Dani Jamerson will usually stay with me, and I often have tour days set up and they might stay with me as well. OD probably remembers Liz Moriando who rode down with him one year. We all ended up writing that year. There Was a Guy.

So while I am usually there on the first night (which is normally LOCALS night) I rarely perform. If they had something they really needed, like the FLORABAMA MAIN room, I might take it. But other than that, it is difficult for me to drive down, and then go to performing. I no longer do that.

One year I drove down, played two times the first night, and then were doing two a day for most of the entire time. I played 14 times over the 10 days. I am sort of an odd duck at Frank Brown because I am known for three things.
I'm From Alabama, and many of the people I went to school with, knew me in my rock band days, or have known me down there, so I am considered a "REGIONAL artist."
Then, I played for ten years, almost once a month at most of the clubs in that area, so I am considered a LOCAL ARTIST.
Then I am from Nashville, have had cuts, and am considered a National writer and artist.

Venues request me, and often they have to resist booking me in multiple venues AT THE SAME TIME. They once booked me in Mobile AND PENSECOLA at the SAME TIME! I ended up doing the  Pensecola one and then filled in for a host at the Florabama. I also do things that are NOT WITH THE FESTIVAL. I do private parties and events that are for other organization. Last year was an RV park that hired me and another singer, for their own show. That was not Festival organized.
So you guys go ahead and book around me. You'll find me down there. I'll be at the Ragatta, probably room 301 or 201. I'm generally in the same room. Pam, the manager, loves me. She is Greg Crowe's cousin.

MAB

Thanks for the input MAB. I think I'm supposed to pick up OD at the airport, what ever day he gets in. IF he gets in after 3pm, then I can just drive over that morning, since the airport is between me and Regatta. Then, what ever day he wants to leave, IF he leaves in the AM, and needs to be at the airport by 9 or 10 AM, I will take him back also. The only issue that may be is that I will be volunteering for the lunch service for 3 or 4 of the days, so on those days, I will need to be at the Flora-Bama by 9:30ish. I can absolutely take OD in with me. There are usually a few ladies around by then he can flirt with. May even get him to help me get set up. I do not plan on working the night shift this year. BUT, I guess if they really need me, I may work 1 or 2 nights also. Hopefully on nights you are playing there.

Chime in there OD! And, we might start communicating via email or phone also.

                                               MEETING THE IMOVEABLE OBJECT

I live a pretty charmed life. I have been around the block in every way you can imagine. I am at a point where I do pretty much what I want, and have a great existence. I do what I love. Talk about, teach about, write songs and all things music and am paid for it. Very lucky. So much of it is great but every once in a while it is not so great. That is what this is about. In all of our discussions about the current state of songwriting, getting our songs out there, trying to participate in the music industry, I pretty much have to beat the drum about "writing with younger artists." The reason is that for songwriters, it is now ALL an INSIDE business. There are really no pitches any more, no services, or pluggers that are going to make our dreams come true. And particularly something done from the comfort of our living room. If you want to get someone to record your songs, you better be writing with the artists. There is nothing left.

But writing with artists is NEVER as easy as it seems. The younger people, the milinnials, are the most self focused, selfish, self absorbed, sometimes out of touch people there is. You see them, constantly on their cell phones, constantlhy walking around totally absorbed, playing Pokemon Go, tuning the world out. It is all about THEM, and what they are doing AT THIS MOMENT! Tough crowd to try and work.

And when it comes to WRITING with them, a lot of times, that is just not going to happen. But that is another thing we all have to overcome. What separates the amateurs from the Professionals. Of course it is always better when they COME TO YOU, because they respect you, seek you out, whatever. But that also doesn't guarantee anything. I call them "VALIDATORS" because they are just looking for a pat on the back and someone to tell them how great they are.
It doesn't happen to me that often but sometimes does.

Recently I had a younger person, under 20, who did a day tour with me. She brought her Mother along and we had a pretty good time. She is beautiful, good personality, sweet overall, and her Mother is wonderful. But then.... there was her music.

She played song after song after song, about 20 of them. They were ALL THE SAME SONG. The chord pattern were exactly the same. Her lyrics (what I could understand of them), were about the same things. Boys. What you expect from younger people, especially girls. As I would listen, make notes, and after each song would note that it was EXACTLY the same as the song before. She kept saying "I don't agree." And would go on to tell me that "The pop world is like that.." Yes it is. That is why it is so BAD. When people talk about how all country sounds the same, they apparently have not listened to pop and rock radio in the past 20 years. It all sounds just alike. But even pop has something to it, engaging hooks and at least things you can sing to. The big songs always have the huge sing along part, and while the lyrics might not be Shakespear, they do have some things that set them apart.

Most of the time when I hear songs from this age group of people, (Like on EVERY WRITERS NIGHT AND OPEN MIC)
it's mostly the same thing. The grooves are identical. The chord progressions change every half second so you can't understand any melodies, there is nothing consistent that allows you to hang onto anything. There are no hooks to speak of. And they all sing like they have a mouth full of cement. They also will have four and five verses.

That was this girl. And she was SO SURE she was in the ballpark, I finally had to kind of be the bear in the situation. I told her that she really didn't have any songs yet, would really need to co-write more, and really need to get out of the same old thing. She looked at me like I was an idiot, and totally wrong. So that is how we left it. I didn't even try to write one with her because I don't think she is there. She is going to have to find out a lot of things first. This was her first trip so it will take a while to sink in. I hope she doesn't go broke before then.

This is pretty much the same with almost everyone of that age group I meet. They are SO POSITIVE they are going to "MAKE IT." they don't really understand what the current business is and is not. They are the same people that take "Ancient French poetry" as a major in college and then can't figure out why they can't get jobs. And live in their parent's basement.

Oh well. We try. But I did want you to know for those of you who try to "give advice", make some positive comments, or try to get them to work with you,  and hit that "immovable object," don't worry. We all hit it sometimes. Even me.

They certainly  dont  write them like this..  MAX  audience participation that was  "Ahem  Dj  created at a disco in Sydney and picked up  country wide amongs the kids "  and this is what happened. Language warning !!

Here is a link to an Aussie anthem . The audience participation was generated by a Dj Sydney who turned the sound down for the response . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_py6WbMV1k
Justin Parker
A wise Artist/Hit Songwriter once told me...

"Justin, you just sit back and watch. Facebook will end the careers of more musicians, than drugs or alcohol ever did."

Moral of the story:

If you support your family, and put food on your table by trying to retain, and GAIN a fanbase, just take a moment to breathe, and think before you post. The bigger you get, the more politically diverse your audience will become. That's a good thing! However, you spend a lifetime building an "image" in this music business, don't destroy it because you can't resist opining on the latest #CauseDeJour or the temptation to simply "rant" publicly at any time, especially in this heated political season.

Don't allow arrogance to cloud your judgment, (especially for us Texans!!!) LOL Never lie to yourself, and say "If they don't like what I say, they can go listen to someone else! I don't need em" Remember what pride comes before...? Sure a few outlaw artists/legends "bucked the system" back in the day, but that was a lot of image, and the pioneers of "outlaw country" conformed first, became well known, THEN changed their public image, and Facebook wasn't around either. Ignore this at your own peril, you MAY get away with it, but... you MAY not! You never know when the "line" has been crossed in a listeners mind. Why risk it???

I'm not preaching, my livelihood doesn't depend on fans, I have a day job. I'm just trying to pay forward some sound advice I once received that's come to mind as I scroll through my feed this morning.

Just food for thought.

Write on,

Justin

Kid,

That is some pretty good adivise.  May I add another bit of wisdom for anyone reading along.

When a Wise Old Man tells a dumbass kid they were NOT in Tootsie's during the dumbass Kid's first trip to Nashville EVER!!!   Maybe that dumbass Kid (meant with the utmost respect) should listen and not revert to calling the Wise Old Man a "Senile Old Bastard". !!!!!!!!!!!     It looks pretty bad for the dumbass Kid when he has to post a picture on his Facebook page with a frown on his face because he just had to apologize to the very Wise Old Man and buy him the coldest and best tasting beer he has ever tasted.  Ha!!!    Yum!!!   That was a good beer.

Really interesting video there John. I think it is cool these children's concerts with this "Angles" group. That song must have been really big on the radio, and in churches all over the country. Is that a pre-school or elementery school singing along? They must really know that band. Probably in some weddings too.

It was big at senior proms, outdoor concerts and  still goes on...  Ozzie kultcha . Take out the expletives and  its one of those songs that  immediately   got  kids to their feet  dancing . Havent heard one that does that   for years   ..... but then i dont  go to many  kids concerts .

Marc-Alan Barnette
I was joking john, was talking about the explitives. Unfortunately, there are a lot of these kinds of songs here. Everytime you see one of these outdoor festivals, there will always be not one but a TON of bands or singers that do these types of songs. Four letter words everywhere, and THAT is what are firing people up, In a lot of ways everything has lost all sense of common decorum. And I come from a rock background. But mediocrity rules everywhere. Too bad.

MAB
John Westwood
Taking the expletive part out, it still gets feet up and dancing. It still features in many playlists  and live performances. Not bad for a song that is  about 30 years old esp  when  you look at a lot of the other 80's  stuff . A kind of rocked up rockabilly....... foot tapping,  repetitive lines,  simple melody  structure, singable by  most .

OD OldDog

JW, a perfect example of a melody driven song that gets the attention of the audience and their toes tapping.  Many melody driven songs like this were popular in every decade of music regardless of the lyrics. Great melodies will always rule over great lyrics as far as music goes.  IMHO

In keeping with the current election season's innuendos and half-truths, I am going to start a rumor that I used an electrified ukulele in my latest 50/90 song.  ... and no, I am not going to post a link so it can be verified.

Well Kevin, I went and listened to that "electric Uke" song, for which you posted no link, which, being the political season investigative reporter I can be, found a link anyway, and now you have been exposed!  It's pretty cool! Sounds like a cross between Beatles, Stones, and maybe Animals? I didn't hear much electric ukulele though. It must have been buried in the mix. I didn't really hear it until right at the end.

Oh yea! For anyone else who might want to listen, here it is: http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/18050

OD OldDog

KevMo,

Please know the Old Dog tried to follow that link and listen to your song; but my old computer program just won't allow me to give it a listen.

However; please know I'm really impressed to hear you are performing with an electric Uke.  Please bring it to FB with you in the Fall along with your favorite acoustic guitar and banjo.

Don't forget you have already promised me your guitar if you visit Gulf Shores and are mysteriously eaten by a shark.   Now I realize the chances of taking out a large life insurance policy out on you, with the Old Dog as the beneficiary, will most likely not happen, and all I hoped for previously was obtaining your guitar; but now you mention an electric Uke also (note I have already promised your banjo to Philboy).

Not to scare you off from attending; but realize the Old Dog is in contact with JohnW and asking him to capture a Great White Shark off the Aussie shores where he lives. I'd hate to think JohnW would demand the electric Uke as his payment but if that is what it takes realize it's only business (as the American Mafia say).

Before I go any further with this plan, could you tell me more about that acoustic guitar you are going to bring down???   Is it acoustic/electric???   Is it a famous brand name???   Does it have a built in tuner???   Does it at least have new strings???  Is their a hard shell case or just a soft shell case???   S.O.B. Brother, I have to make an executive decision and make one fast.  Any information at all would be most helpful.

By the way, if you stop at a roadside rest during your trip down, don't clean up the blood from your injury.  They tell me fresh blood will attrack the sharks.  Just Sayin'
