It might not even effect Justin, since Texas artists and writers tend to march to their own drummer. The PRO's situation is more Nashville, New York, and LA, as those three music centers are really the center of the AMERICAN part of the MUSIC INDUSTRY. Texas artists, and writers tend to have their own rules, and Texas is a "Whole 'nother country" They don't really interact that much with any thing outside of Texas. But they also don't do a lot outside of Texas, so it may be a totally different situation. Texas has it's own charts, it' own touring venues, it's own way that it does business. Kind of the only place that does it like that. As I have said before that probably will change, but I am not sure that any of this will ever effect much of Texas.

And it most likely won't affect a lot of people, since so many people are solo writers and entities. It will effect their ability to get INTO the music industry. For most intents and purposes now, they won't be able to do that. So people with the desire on web sites, and avenues making their way in, will no longer find those paths open to them.

I hope every one is well -- and MAB, good luck on that carpal tunnel stuff, pretty common for musicians and computer keyboardists.

I am doing 50/90 again and my stuff is turning out mighty weird this year.  So I am calling it alternative (unfortunately it is in that "alternative to good" category -- ha, ha).

Eddie, you are probably doing better that 99% of the folks that are trying to do this.  yea, you're a one percenter,  Congrats from me!
Marc-Alan Barnette
Yeah Eddie. You are in the  1%. I know some people on the top of the charts who are not making that. Now people are going to be coming to you for loans, pitching songs, you will be getting ten-twenty five CD's per day, two or three hundred emails, particularly from pitching services, begging to pitch your material! Looks like your obscurity is about to end!

MAB and Phil,

I look forward to discussing this more in person my phone is now just starting to switch to other websites, not typing etc. This will affect some artists, but open mics are alive and well. The area I live in its not unlike many areas around Texas, in the past six months I've seen four restaurants open within five min of my house.... Their m.o.??? Live music, all hosting open mics, on any given night I could find an open mic minutes from my house, the "craving" for the "good ole days" country is no longer just bliss, it's not the Chris Stapleton effect either, down here it's the norm, it's required, Deanna Carter was a block from my work playing a couple weeks ago, Nashville names of the eighties and nineties are everywhere, every night, they sell c.d.s. (Still lol) merch, and people pay $

Man, I just lost a HUGE post I spent a lot of time on and I am PISSED OFF!!!!! I'll try to do it again later, but man, it gets tough trying to do this stuff online just to have it dissapear If there was any advice I'd give to a web site, it would be an "automatic save" on this stuff. Looking forward to talking in real time with you, OD aka Mr Footsie, Philintheknow, mizz Tina dee, miss ri, miss Bonnie, brother Jimmy B, and others!!! Whoever we may see!! Just popping in to say Hi. Looks like mostly testosterone around here at the moment, so figured you could use a female in the mix Wink
I'll be expecting to hear lots of good things about all the meeting up in Nashville. It reallly hurt not to be able to join everyone for the Bash this year, but sometimes life doesn't let us do everything we want to do, and hard choices have to be made. I've been trying to catch up here, just reading along for a few days, getting the lay of the land back. Listening to some music. It seems pretty quiet, so I was glad to see you're keeping the home fires burning. :)

John, typing in Word and copying in here doesn't always work. You can loose formatting and font. And it is an extra step that is not always needed. Let me offer a different approach that works for me; HOWEVER FIRST LET ME TELL YOU WHAT JUST NOW HAPPENED TO ME.
While typing in that last sentence, I got all the way to, "works for me;"
. Then I wanted to capitalize my next word (which was going to be "Go"), but I hit some combination of keys that deleted my typing all the way back up to, "John, typing in". I'm not sure what I did! SO, let me preface this approach with an explanation. If that is what is happening to folks, I don't know what to tell you except be careful on your key board.

WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO ME is, I finish typing and click the "Submit" button. BUT, it NEVER posts. IF THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOU, let me offer this solution. I am able to highlight my entire post and copy it. I usually just do a ctrl C. Then I do an Explorer "Refresh". It's that little circle with an arrow in the address bar at the top of your browser. This will refresh the main page, and close the post screen. In every case, my post is not there. So, I simply start a new post and paste my copied post into it, usually using ctrl V. This time, the post takes and all is good. Another thing you might do, which again will be an extra step that is not usually necessary. It is just a safety move. BEFORE you click the "Submit" button, go ahead and highlight your entire post and do a ctrl C.

Hope this helps.

I dont see losing  formatting  and  font as an issue  .However...

Ive only  had the missing input once. Maybe its a PC thing  a I am on mac  usually.
Whatever, copying or saving  before hitting  send/submit/post  is a good idea

John and all, let me reiterate what happened to me yesterday. I was typing my post in. I had finished about 3 sentences. The last sentence I had ended with a semicolon ; The next sentence I wanted to start with a capital G. HOWEVER, what ever combination of keys I accidentally hit; A ctrl key, a shift key, both keys, and a capital G, caused the editor to delete most of what I had already typed in. Luckily, this time, it was only a few sentences and I was able to type it back in.

NOW, the OTHER thing that has happened to me is this. I've finished typing in several sentences. I decide I want to insert a sentence somewhere, so I move my cursor there and click to set it so I can type in my new sentence. Then, I MOVE the cursor out of my way so I can see what I'm typing.  HOWEVER, since I cannot look at the screen while typing, I looked down at the keyboard to start typing, but when I looked back up at he screen, I was NOT typing where I though I had set the cursor. Instead, I was typing where I had MOVED the cursor. This happens to me off and on also. EVEN in Word. It is not limited to this editor.

The reality of these two situations is, it is not the website. It really is not the editor. It is some built in "capability" I seem to be accidentally using. There is no solution to these kind of user errors, other than the user needs to be real careful. Maybe, if some one in tech support could give us a list of these "special built in functions", and the keystroke combinations that invoke them, we could better understand when something strange happens.

There IS still the issue of AFTER you finish typing in your post, and you hit the Submit button, the site goes into  never, never land, and the post is just never posted. HOWEVER, EVERY time this has happened to me, I have been able to highlight my entire post and copy it. Then I refresh the page, which causes the post edit box to disappear. All I have to do is start a new post and paste my copied text into it and "Submit" again. This has always worked for me.

Question.....

When  you are sending a cd with a song on it to a radio station, and you are sending more than one song. Do you send a separate cd for each song or put them all on one cd?

thanks Peggy

  A LITTLE GOOD SONGWRITING NEWS..LEGALLY!!!!

By: Marc-Alan Barnette

For any of you who have ever been frustrated by getting a publisher, producer, artist, or ANYONE I nthe music industry to listen to your songs, one of the PRIMARY REASONS is THIS.

FEAR OF FRIVOLOUS LAWSUITS!

Now the “American Lottery” is to SUE someone because they have a word, a title, a melodic phrase that sounds like their song. Listen up folks, EVERY SONG SOUNDS LIKE SOME OTHER SONG!!!!! THERE ARE ONLY 12 NOTES!!!! ONLY SO MANY EMOTIONS, ONLY SO MANY WAYS TO SAY I LOVE YOU!!!!! You SOUND LIKE SOMETHING ELSE!!! TRUST ME!!!

For that past 20 or so years, people have been suing hit writers left and right and almost ALL OF THEM ARE TOTALLY WITHOUT MERIT. But it costs money to defend them, money to fight them, and all REPUTATBLE companies have STOPPED LISTENING TO ANYTHING FROM ANYONE THEY DON’T KNOW. It is the reason for the “NO UNSOLICTED SONGS” policies.

Recently the entire “Led Zepplin/Stairway to Heaven” Lawsuit, illustrated this perfectly. A totally meritless lawsuit, brought forth by an unscrupulous attorney and an entire money grab. Causing Jimmy Page to say something like “You are asking me if I remember a SONG from the 60’s and 70’s, I DON’T REMEMBER THE SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES!!!!”

(I’m paraphrasing).

But it is something organizations like NSAI (Nashville Songwriter’s Association International) have been trying to get instituted for years, THE LOSER PAYS.

If someone brings a totally frivolous lawsuit, and LOSE the case, they have to pay all legal fees and court costs. This would cut down on this and bring some much needed common sense back into the equation. Read and learn. If you think someone has STOLEN YOUR SONG, you better be able to prove that they not only did so, but MEANT TO HARM YOU PROFESSIONALLY. Most people just can’t make that claim.

Peggy, if you are "sending in" a CD to a radio station and they didn't ask for it, it doesn't matter because it's going in the trash anyway. They can't and don't listen to unsolicited material and couldn't play it if they wanted to. There are not enough hours in the day, and they cannot even go through all the hundreds of CD's they get, many of them from the MAJOR ARTISTS. Remember, even the songs of Lady Ga Ga, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, etc. don't always get played.

If you are doing a SINGLE release, and do it through a publicity campaign and have an ARTIST involved (if you are the artist and are touring in the area, the MIGHT play it, but if you are NOT on a major label they CANNOT play it.) There are also liscencing concerns and part of the latest PRO news, about "Consent Decrees and who liscences songs are going to stop even more songs from being played.

If it is a small radio station, college or local stations, they have a little more leeway, but are not going to go through your CD to find one they like.

You have to "flip the desk." If you are a radio station, you are there to sell ADVERTISING TIME. You are not there to MAKE careers. Major labels buy ADVERTISING TIME. ADVERTISING TIME keeps the lights on, pays the liscencing fees ,salaries, etc.

You might be more successful finding web sites or pod casting sites that might play your music. If you are going to do that, you would need to provide a decent package, picture of the artist, cover letter on them, label and contact information, pertinate publishing info.

The main thing to do now, Peggy is by pass radio completely and go to YOU TUBE, with a simple video of the song. That is really the mover and shaker of the world now. Going to radio is sort of like getting your 8 track tapes all polished and ready for release! you can make them PERFECT, but they are STILL 40 years out of date.
Radio is still there, but now it is a step done LATER in the journey.

MAB
Justin Parker
Peggy,

I can't remember if you are in Texas or not, but to piggy back on what MAB said and teaches, that is why writing with the artist is so crucial. It's really incredible the time, and energy these folks must put out to get a song on radio. About two weeks ago a guy I wrote a few songs with went on a radio tour. Now I suspect if I'm lucky he's going to cut one or two songs we wrote on his next album, we also wrote a "cause" type song never meant for radio but it was at the request of a large 501c3 organization who wanted a "theme song" for benefits. One that made em reach for the tissues and the wallets if you will. I happened to notice him the other day streaming live on Facebook from a particular radio station, when I began watching he was plugging the organization and just so happened to begin the song live! LOL that was cool to see, but the reality is he was nine hours away, gone from home for a week, made no bones about his exhaustion, and finally entered at #68 on the charts, he moved further, and still is but I know he missed time with his wife, a handful of his kids baseball games, and spent hours a day in a van... All that just to better his odds at being considered! It wasn't until I went to his Facebook and read a post about his travel schedule I realized how lucky I was to be a "lyricist" and not do this full time. I ate tacos at his house, drank a beer of his, and my work was done for the most part short of supporting him how I could. It was incredibly humbling to realize, "man, the song was just the beginning! This guy has got... To.... Be... Exhausted!!!" In my earlier writing days I dropped off a single for a friend at a radio station, in a package my wife helped me get ready, snacks, neat treats etc. Nothing crazy, just what I thought would really make em want to listen, I know the cd made it on the girls desk... I called a few days later, and requested it to see if they would play it... "Sir, I don't see that on our playlist???" A few more calls, and the reality of what I thought was going the extra mile, vs. what an artist does???? Pressing the flesh, burning the gas, my little care package to get my foot in the door wouldn't have paid for a quarter tank of gas these guys spend!!!! Not to be blunt but honestly.... don't waste your time. Write with the artists, start small, build a name as someone who adds value, hang around long enough people recognize you, and build from there!

By the way did I mention a cowriter of mine is on the bachelorette??? LOL it's so weird to see him I think he is still on, Luke Pell, they haven't mentioned his music once though! LOL funny how the media molds a character, although he is a West point grad, decorated combat vet etc. It's neat to see him on t.v. Just a funny tidbit, he doesn't win but I think he does get into the top four.

Adios y'all
Peggy Burnham
thank you MAB and Justin,
Yes of course I am in Texas!! lol. I understand and agree with everything each of you said. I am in a small town and have relationships with some of the radio stations. I do think that they would play a song from a hometown person. They are very much a hometown proud town.

The only reason I want to do it is to do everything I can to make contacts. I am hoping to reach more artists and co-writers by getting some of my work heard. I am trying to touch all the bases to make contacts so that I can do more co-writes.

I am every day doing what I can to get better and find people to write with. It doesn't always turn out. Sometimes you give lyrics you really like to someone and it doesn't turn out the way you planned. Meaning several things. One case, my ideas were taken and the person made changes and wrote a song of their own. Another case music was added and a terrible video made that can't be used to promote the song and they are not available to make something else. There are other examples. I am waiting right now to hear back from someone I sent lyrics to 2 weeks ago. We were trying to write in emails until a certain point when I would travel and be with them in person.  etc. etc. etc. Not all of the contacts work out. I have had one very successful cowrite that we have two really good songs together.

There is a songwriting workshop on the 23rd in our town I will be attending. I am very hopeful to make local contacts there. This will be my third workshop. The other two were in Dallas.

Thanks Peggy
