BUILDING AN ARTIST, THE NEXT CHAPTER

Dani Jamerson has been here this week, performing and writing. The girl is extrodinary and is a prime example of how I work with artists, and how I approach the Industry. I have been working with her now for about three years and watched her develop from a better than average singer with some basic writing skills, to a VERY POLISHED PROFESSIONAL WHO IS BLOWING PEOPLE AWAY IN EVERY THING SHE DOES. Very proud of her. and of course, I take credit for ALL OF IT!!!LOL!

The first step has been over the past three years. Her coming to Nashville about four times a year. Working with me,writing dozens of songs, and coaching her through all the right moves. We produced her first CD at jay's, and then she has done JUST THE RIGHT THING, STAYED IN MICHIGAN!!!! She writes here, then goes back up there and PERFORMS THOSE SONGS OUT with her band and solo, she is on all the time. And it SHOWS in her performances. When she plays here in this jaded town, not only does she SHUT EVERYONE UP, but in all my years here, is THE ONLY ONE WHO ACTUALLY SELLS CDS!!!! That comes from HAVING AN INTERESTINGLY WRITTEN PRODUCT,DIFFERENT THAN EVERYTHING ELSE, AND PRESENTING IT IN AN OVERWHELMINGLY EXCITING WAY. She is doing everything right. And at least for now, is DOING EVERYTHING I TELL HER TO DO. We'll see how long that lasts, but for now, it is working great.

So she is getting a LOT of attention. And now that is getting to an even higher level. On Wed. she sat in for one song with me at a benefit for writer Stan Webb. Stan wrote "WE'RE FROM THE COUNTRY AND WE LIKE IT THAT WAY"  and other hit songs. He has cancer so we did a benefit Wed at the Commodore. There were dozens of writers there but one most important, ANGELA KASSETT. Angela wrote "SOMETHING IN RED" for Lorrie Morgan, and has a couple of Garth Brooks hits. She is a great writer. She played in the round before mine, and was still sticking around afterword. That is different.
When Dani played,I watched Angela and she was fixated on her. So afterward, when she pulled me over to say hi, she immediately asked about Dani. She was blown away. I told her we needed to get her on the team and I think that will happen before long.

The second phase of an artist's career is BUILDING STREET CREDIBILTY. That is in WHO YOU ARE WRITING WITH.

You see in Nashville it is NOT WHO YOU KNOW, BUT WHO KNOWS YOU AND HOW THEY KNOW YOU!

If you are seen as someone who is a mover and shaker, who delivers in product, who is always where you say you are going to be, and do WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO DO you will GET AND KEEP ATTENTION.

Now this is something that plays to what Jarrod asked. "How do you find co-writers?"
In many cases, they have to find YOU.

Nashville is two things:

THE ART OF THE HANG.
THE ART OF THE REFERRALL.

When it comes to co-writing, building relationships and friendships, you have to be INVITED to those next steps like co-writing, performing, etc. They have to see you. And a lot of that comes through the writers nights. That is where you get to show your stuff. The earlier or the later you perform, the less likely you are going to be seen. So you are trying to get better slots with the hosts. That means you have to DELIVER on songs that are interesting.

Go in with a bunch of ballads, negative, angry, self absorbed songs, you are DEAD. No one is interested in that.
If you have just another bunch of trucks, tailgates, redneck out on the river party songs, you are DEAD.
Already got more than we need. Don't let the current radio fool you. Those songs and their artists are WALKING DEAD. They just don't know it yet.

So your existing catalogue that you are building now is going to serve you in the future. might not be getting cuts, might be the things that get you TO THE CUTS. But you need to be discovering a lot of new artists, you need to be writing with those artists and convincing them that YOU HAVE WHAT THEY NEED!

That is the key to the music industry.
The secret is: Manipulating them to do what YOU want them to do, BUT MAKE THEM THINK IT'S THEIR IDEA!!!

MAB, you know what I've been through since I moved here, and everything you say is the music gospel!!!   I had not been asked by anyone to write with them, other than a few people who had just started writing, until I started working with YOU!  In two months of  working together, I've already been asked to write with people who are sought after writers, and we have commercial songs that have been getting great feedback from our Writer's Night performances!  Knowing BOTH what to do, and what not to do in this industry, and especially this town, is critical!!  I would not trust my songwriting teaching to anyone but you.  You have been inside out this industry, and have encountered everything anyone could ever run across, and more!  Your ability to draw out the authenticity of the writer/musician is mind-blowing!!  You look at every angle of the artist's raw talent, directing and developing it into the perfect, marketable, memorable package and experience that both the industry leaders and fans are wanting, but are not finding by those who try to wing-it on their own!!  Because of you, I had the honor of writing with Dani Jamerson and you and have one the best songs in my catalog from it, AND got to work with such an incredible person, talent and writer while having the time of my life!!

I have always struggled with keeping focused and feeling under-supported until I started working with you.  Now, we have new KILLER songs in one writing session, not two or three etc. sessions per song, and  you keep me inspired to constantly compete with myself -- to write better songs than the last, that represent me and resonnate with the fans!  You set a process in motion!  Better songs naturally attract  the better writers asking to write with us,  developing relationships that broaden our fan base, industry attention, etc.!

I wish I had worked with you from the beginning, but am just so thankful I finally did!   I wish EVERY songwriter/artist had the MAB advantage!!

DANI JAMERSON is absolutely, CRAZY TALENTED, beautiful inside and out, that's just the tip of the iceberg!  You won't want to miss anything she does, or any input she shares on The Ramp!

Big Ed Moore

Hey MAB! I'm getting so sick of Nashville. Everybody now has a Rapper on their songs or they have the nerve to actually Rap themselves. It's totally gratuitous and not authentic in the least. Today, I see your cute little friend Megan has Bubba Sparks on her new single. WHY?! I guess everybody just HAS TO jump on a bandwagon they don't even belong on. If these singers who now also Rap like Jake Owen, Eric Church, Blake Shelton and more, were actually good at Rapping, that would be one thing, but they're NOT good Rappers. If George Jones were still alive, I guess he'd have a Rapper on his songs. LOL! What the Hell is going on back there?! Talk some sense into these people, will ya? You KNOW that I know Rap, so I'm qualified to say if someone really CAN Rap or not. I leave for a while and this is what happens. LOL!!! I hope this link works.

Ed,
About four years ago, this six foot six, long haired rap producer came into Nashville and started infecting everyone with his West Coast hijinks and destroying our music. He looked somewhat like that rap producer Rick Rubin, and is the one who destroyed our world! LOL!

When you were talking about this years ago i told you I thought it would be a mistake for Nashville to go in that direction. I knew it was going to be a bunch of "white guys trying to be street," and looking as stupid as Vanilla Ice and all those total idiots trying to think some bling and a grill would increase their record sales,

Their target audience is all these idiot white kids who are guilty for being white and think they can get into "safe rap" witbout realizing that there IS NO SAFE RAP. The very definition of Rap is challenging athority and living on the edge of society mores.

My problem with it is that it all sounds alike, is all as sophomoric as it can be, to make enough rhymes to make it work sounds like a Dr. Dre Suess book, and diminishes the singabilty and story telling ability. It SUCKS!
But yes, it is a band wagon. And all these kids, the artists, players, etc. all have greown up with a steady diet  of bad rap and now they think they can do it. it is like the cassette days, one bad dub after another bad dub. And all ending up what we always said it would be when you mixed COUNTRY with RAP.

CRAP.

Thank you Colt Ford. Wags, and Matt, are you getting your  enjoyment from the garbage you guys wanted in this? LOL!

"I know not what choice others will make....but for the MAB, RAP AIN'T ONE OF THEM!!!!!"

Those were some great discussions! Brother HoggDawg!!!! Great to hear from you man! Oklahoma??? I don't know how I missed that all this time... Funny thing, yesterday I was at my cousins club (he's a bouncer, doesn't own it) but nontheless he was kind enough to call me out of the blue and tell me had a table reserved for me in the VIP where the artists hang out. I felt all special and whatnot, seated twelve, even a card with mine and my wifes name, until it dawned on me, my wife didn't come because she had to teach vacation Bible school at our church, so it was just me alone at a table for twelve, with a card and my "date" seemingly standing me up... Two names, one guy? I introduced the waitress to my enterouge of 10 imaginary friends, and pretend wife... hahaha lol seriously it worked out for the best, there was no where else to sit it was right out side the greenroom so I sit and talk at length with 3 different big named Texas artists, one who actually inquired about a song me & Meh had written (we'll see were that goes) had a great time. You could tell the ones who were "artist types" and the ones who were so call mid convo they were pulling out iPhone showing me lyrics they'd wrote, above the noise of a loud Texas band, shoot the stage was like ten feet up. Theres nothing cooler that a seasoned artist, who loves to talk writing as if he started yesterday. I had a great time.

off to a cowrite right now... more to come.... Breaking an artist???? where's that post?

The kid finally got a job secured, so I feel comfortable to get back out in the game...

Marc-Alan Barnette

The post is right above you Justin. It is not about BREAKING an artist. It is about BUILDING an artist. Too many people are so concerned about BREAKING an artist, they are never concerned with BUILDING one. So they get vapid, sound like everyone else, look like everyone else artists doing mediocre versions of the really mediocre product that is already out there. And the SALES FIGURES reflect it.

There are more and more artists out there, more and more songs out there, and less and less money coming in for any of it. So before anyone wants to try and BREAK SOMEONE, they better make sure they have something WORTH BREAKING. Or they will GO BROKE!!!! Drive the streets of Nashville and see the signs, "FOR LEASE" FOR SALE" AND FOR RENT." those people used to try and break things too. Only ended up breaking their bank accounts.

Kid,

Good for you finally getting your job situation working in your favor.  Now pull your pants up and go to work.  Ha!!!

Hey, also allow me to congratulate you for getting some attention from your native Texan artists.  I would be happy to get some respect like that in my area.  The only thing close to respect, the Old Dog gets, is the young baggers at Kroger's asking me if I need help getting my groceries to my car.  S.O.B. !!!

I once walked up to the elementary school as they were letting out for the day, hoping to impress one of the good looking single mom's.  Hell....... I couldn't even get the grandmothers to return my smile.  WTF!!!

So it's back to Bingo Night for the Old Dog.  The older gals up there treat the Old Dog like fresh meat.  It is so degrading to be over sixty with a beer gut, going bald, and short on wind; only to be looked at as a sex object from one of them.

Oh, if all of them only knew the Old Dog was a songwriter worthy of more than just being a sex object; just because I don't use a walker yet.
Now I know what Brad Pitt must feel like going out in public.  Ha!!!

Before the Old Dog disappears for a few days, allow me to make a few comments.

Fast Eddie:  The font size you have is still to small.  Could you consider making it a 10 or 12 font size so old guys can read it???   Thank-you.

Jarrod, good to have you with us. it sounds like you are a wise man and quick learner. From what MAB has told us, and what you have told us, I gather your education and job discription (attorney) may become a challenge for you at times.  I only mean your education that led up to a law degree, and the proper English you use everyday in your job. It can be confusing to you what is conversational with your peers, and conversational in your songs. Specifically "Country" songs.  I'm sure you can work through all of that; expecially if you ask some songwriting friends to offer their critique and advice.

Hey Brother Mattly (MattH).  Good to hear from you again Ol Buddy; it's also good to hear you are back into the music and going strong.  I hope you share some of those songs you mentioned; it would be great to hear some good music from you finally.
Wait Brother,  you always had good music, I just mean it would be great to hear more from you.  Ha!!! (you know the Old Dog had to tease you).

RiDawn Raelette,  I agree totally with your assessment of working with The MAB.  Just think, he is totally responsible for bringing you to the attention of the Old Dog.  How great is that???  Ha!!!

Have a great weekend everyone,

OD

Pretty great, OD!!  Thanks for befriending me here Smile

Billy J. Thomas

And I'm here to assist Marc, and throw in my knowledge of the Industry whenever it's relevant to what is being discussed at the time, and I'm sure Big Ed will chime in also...this is the best place I know of to get the REAL lowdown on songwriting basics, what is trending currently, and how the Industry works nowadays, and it's free...

Marc-Alan Barnette

Good to see you, Sir William!

Yep, when the Queen kinghted me, she hit me kinda hard with the sharp side of the sword and it took 9 stictches to close up the gash, but luckily she had insurance to cover it...carry on

Marc-Alan Barnette

Lucky to have that. Some don't.

What's your story Billy?

Hello rampers and MABites,

Dang I visit facebook every day and I sort of dislike the interface of FB -- oh well.   Still doing 50/90, but I haven't hit a lick in almost 10 days.   My goal for this 50/90 is semi one take demos with no BIAB or auto-tune (ha, ha).  I probably won't make it though, some addictions are harder than others.

Sounds like you are all doing great, keep it up and keep playing and singing.

P.S.  how do you add lyrics to the open mic songs you post (or how do they show up on the open mic at all)?  I guess simple is hard to do.

when  you  upload the  track there is an  option to add lyrics before you  publish

How do you publish?   I never saw any link that looked like "publishing".  It is probably hidden in plain sight.

Justin Parker

LOL MAB, i was wondering if that's what you meant... i dunno if I read your earlier post wrong, or a mistype, I could had sworn you said... "I'll post a bit later Breaking An Artist"  Then I saw the post "Building An Artist" I'd just gotten a funny visual in my head of someone "Breaking a horse" a term which we use often so I thought that might actually be a post you had coming... lol Anyways... great "Buildiing" post.

Brother Billy J, look forward to your info!

Brother OD, i lol'd at your grocery store comment.

I had to cut my last post a bit short but I meant to ask the HawgDogg if he heard anything about a Cross Canadian Ragweed reunion?

Had a GREAT co write yesterday with a girl who is really hustling round here, Kenna Danielle, had tossed a couple verses and CH at her, with an idea for a song called E-Cigarette. We met at her house and she put her spin on it, we gutted it, and it came out pretty solid. We were both really pleased with it. Fun time, she for Michael Berry's Redneck Country Club, which ain't easy to get into. Young, dang hardworking, she's only getting better. Good time yesterday.

The kids off to a family reunion, probably five hundred people there. LOL Take care all!

p.s.

OD i start Monday...

KEVIN!! Welcome aboard. I'm not that crazy about the FB interface either. But, I guess it works o.k. I have uploaded 2 songs, with lyrics. Don't know if I just did it the hard way or what, but it sure was not user friendly for me. Some where on the upload page there was a small, 1 line at a time, list box where I copied (I think from notepad?) and pasted my lyrics into. Unlike the original ramp upload, I could only see one line of lyric at a time, so I had no idea how it would look when it was displayed with the song. So, when I displayed the song, it showed the whole lyric, or at least most of it. Then there was an edit option there that DID display most of the lyric  to correct any mangling the original  copy and paste might have done.

I HAVE NOT seen any tutorials or how-to videos for uploading songs. Maybe post the question in one of the other forum's as well, and you may get a better answer.

RiDawn Rae

Philip, what did you think of the last version of our song??  Smile

Hmmm, RiDawn. I'm not sure I've heard the the last version yet? Are you singing? The only version I've heard, MAB is still singing. That one was really cool! But, I'm sure it would be MUCH better with you singing it.

phil g.

RiDawn Rae

Actually, it's only changed in lyrics .... I am looking forward to recording it (especially as it is a female vocal song, but you gotta hand it to MAB, he pull of anything musically)!  I'll send you the latest version for your approval/comments Smile

Thanks! I guess I'll check my site mail here? Or my hotmail account, philgnco?
