Okay, songs are about real life experiences and I'd like to share a humorous experience that happened to me earlier today.

I was coming back into Mt. Victory from a routine appointment of having some blood drawn from a clinic out of town.  Now, my small village of Mt. Victory is only four blocks long in any direction, and the main square usually has plenty of parking.  Today, I needed to stop at the post office to pick up my mail, and there were only two spots available; but they both required backing into and performing a perfect technique of parallel parking.  I'm pretty good at that but I noticed a spot ahead, at the corner that I could easily pull into and not have to parallel park.  It was a short walk only 1/2 block to the post office.

As I was walking down the sidewalk to the post office, I noticed an SUV about to take one of those parking spots I had passed up just moments earlier.  I noticed she (I could see the driver quite well, didn't know her at all) pulled her vehicle front first into the parking space and didn't parallel park properly by pulling up along side the the car ahead of her then backing into the opening available.

She moved her vehicle back and forth a few times but ended up 3 feet from the curb and slightly out onto the street.  She got out of her car as I was now almost next to her, and I joked  "that is about the sorriest attempt at parking I have ever seen".

She walked up next to me and stated "I know, that was pretty bad".  I then continued to tease her by saying "you know, back in my younger days I used to take pretty girls like you and teach them how to park" (she was older like me but still with an attractive quality I could tell was a good looker in her day).  She smiled and said "I bet you did".  Then she said "You're Steve aren't you".  I was somewhat shocked because I didn't recognize her at all.  Then she said "I'm Paula".   Holy Crap!!!!   Paula!!!!  She grew up in another school district so I once knew her but not that well; however I did immediately recall......  I Did.........  I did take her out parking some 40 years ago.

Not an embarrassing moment at all (awkward maybe but not embarrassing); but just another one of those times us older folks that haven't seen someone for many years doesn't recognize them (nor our changes in appearance) any longer.

I didn't bother to offer my services of teaching Paula how to park this time around.  I'm guessing it would take less effort on my part to show her how to back up into position like it may have back then.  Ugh!!!  So to Speak.   Today, the Old Dog is more concerned about their cooking abilities rather than their parking abilities.  Ha!!!

Now there is a song idea for you; but not one anyone would be interested in, just another life experience best suited for another Old Dog story and not a song.

You could call it "You look better backing up"
"Love to see you Driving away"
"So good to rear end you after all these years!"
"You don't look at day over 90."
"Is that you? Is the Restraining order still in effect?"
"Do you love me like you used to before I ran over your foot?"

All great ideas. Now go write that one. You're welcome.

Good story.

Pretty good suggestions MAB.  I'm not sure where to go with it; but I'm thinking of a first verse like:

Back that rear end up first, then slightly move ahead
Maneuver into position like I originally said
Try not to look behind you, use the mirrors instead
Keep your engine running, we're just getting started.

Oh MAB (and all the Girls), forgive me for that one.  Of course I was just teasin' .

So  you were  making a withdrawal  from blood bank  huh?.  I knew it I knew it when   you flashed  that smile at Robyn . You sharpie, you !

JW, it's not the Old Dog's smile you need to worry about; it's the two fangs that may appear.

BTW,  have you taught Robyn how to properly parallel park???  Maybe I can take her out parking....... I mean for some parking lessons during your next visit while your writing a new song with MAB and Christine Perry. Ha!!!

It's not what happens during the verses or the chorus you guys may write  that should scare you; but what happens on that Bridge.   Oooooh!!!  It's getting close to Halloween.

                                                      RORY AND JOEY

Hey folks. I have hesitated to say anything about this because I don't want people to start sending ME a lot of "so sorry for your loss"or all that other stuff. There are always a lot of terrible things happening in the world, and I try to focus on the good. But when there is something that has a "SONGRAMP" connection, I like to bring it up, just to note it.

Some of you might remember a few years ago if you did the Songramp group tour in Perdido Key during Frank Brown. might remember that I was in the living room working on a song with some of you present, and we heard a voice from the balcony next door that said "That sounds familiar!" I went out on the deck and at the condo next door were my friends Joey and Rory Feek. Rory and I have known each other for years and I had been somewhat following his progress as he got hit songs (Chain of Love, by Clay Walker, one the finest songs I have heard written for many years) and his gorgeous wife, Joey. they had gone on to win the CAN YOU DUET television show, and had a deal with OVERSTOCKED.com, and had done very well Nationally with hit songs, television shows and other things.

they were nice enough to come over for a while and talk to the group and myself about what they had been doing. We were all at the Frank Brown festival doing shows and it was the only time we really got a chance to talk. But it demonstrated the character they had, taking time out of their vacation to talk to some songwriters.

Over the past year. Joey has been going through a battle which Cancer, and for a while had it whipped. Yesterday they announced it was back and going to be very bad. They are wonderful people and I hope feel all the love from people from all over the world. If the true test of who you are is how you touch people you have never met, these two (and their new baby) are truly great people. I celebrate them and how brave they are to face this publicly. My best to both of them and their families.

Thanks guys,
We love you.

I read the attached link -- devastating.  But their attitudes are more than you can ask or.  Let's hope that they can enjoy the time they have left together, however long that might be.  Seems like a couple of wonderful people and grateful for the chances and opportunities they have had come their way.

MAB, sorry to hear about your friend. Wander if they might try to come down to Frank Brown? Don't know if she would even be interested.

Speaking of Frank Brown, I've got my back deck project started to a point where I can leave it for a few weeks. I've got my guitar tuned up. Got my cloths ready. I'M READY!! I'll be staying at the Gulf State Park camp ground in Gulf Shores. It's about 3 miles east of down town Gulf Shores, right on the main highway, 182. It's only about 8 miles from the Flora-Bama. I have my hospitality schedule. I'll only be working 4 days serving. Don't know yet how many nights I'll be working. I told the girl scheduling to just use me any time she needed someone. Could be every night. Could be 2 nights. BUT, probably WILL BE the 9:30 to closing shift. Which works for me. That's usually the easy shift anyway.

So, if the kid Justin is reading along, here's a challenge. According to Google Maps, it's a day drive from your place to Gulf Shores. Take Friday off, and leave around noon Sunday. Would recommend coming over the first weekend, 6-8, but the last weekend, 13-15, will work also. I or someone will have a place for you to crash, so you only need gas and food money. COME ON OVER!!

Hey Phil,

I have not been around them in years but I get the impression they won't be making anymore trips. I think they released this to the press after making all efforts. But they were down for many years.

This is heartbreaking (re: Joey and Rory).

OD OldDog
So sad to hear of Joey's condition.  I wasn't at FB the year MAB spoke of; but I remember him telling the story.

I recall watching them that season on Can You Duet (I believe that was in 08), and how all America fell in love with them. Their country charm, with Rory wearing his signature "Bib Coverals" , while playing guitar and supplying harmony for Joey and her lead vocals, the two of them always displaying their love for each other was to much for America to resist.  They didn't win that year (I believe they placed 3rd) but they were 1st in the hearts of the audience and Judge Naomi Judd.

So I'm guessing Joey and Rory would have been staying in a Condo next to MAB and his group in November 08.  I believe Shelly was one of the people attending that year but I can't remember any other names.  The next year a new group came down November 09 to include myself, Becky, Dean and Janie (from Canada), Matt Hoggard, Denise Baines, and Dave ? from Florida.  MAB has tried to have reunions but it's hard to get everyone on board and available at the same time.

My heart certainly goes out to Rory and Joey.  I hope they get to enjoy a lot of time together.  I'm happy for the good years they did get to share together.  You could tell they both loved life and each other very  much.  The kind of people you would like to be around.

Grrrrr. dont get me onto parking...  I had a 2 year old Ford Falcon Sedan Sports set up .Beautiful wrap around seats and loads of factory extras. It stuck to the  road like **** sticks to a woolen  blanket and it went  like as quick as  crowd in an elevator when someone dropped  a smelly.

I had been thinking   next  vehicle would be a deisel  and when the govt offered a full 50% depreciation  on top of the normal rate  , I jumped in. I couldnt get a decent trade  so I said to Robyn, You have it  and we will offload  your Hyundai.

"oh  no she said :" I dont want it " so I et my secretary have it  for the  balance of the lease  as she  being single mum   couldnt get finance in a regular transaction....

Im getting there  Im getting there...

2 months after the  falcon had  gone  Robyn said  " I really liked that car . We should have  kept it ."

" so" asked I , quite calmly"why didnt  you want i t back then ?"

" I didnt like parking it "  she said" but I guess I'd have  gotten used to it"

It took  2 weeks for me to calm  down  ....................a  little.

I recall parking on a country road with a 16 year old young lady when I was 18. Sure enough, an officer of the law pulled up behind us, lights flashing. He walked up, and demanded our ID's. We handed them over; he looks at me and says, "Sir, do you realize you are contributing to the delinquency of a minor?"

I haven't heard this on the radio but Toby Keith is bring in some good stuff this one...

Justin, could be a good reason you haven't heard it on the radio. On the surface, and since it is Toby Keith, it sounds like a cool song. BUT, if you step back and really listen to the message, and forget it's Toby singing, it turns out this is a typical down on society, there is no good in the world, and it's everybody else's fault including the government, and there is no hope of it ever changing, type of downer protest song, that tries to cover everything from slamming people on welfare, to overdosing on drugs. to stealing, with a pinch of pettifilia stirred in. I had my depression jolt last night when I forgot the lyrics to most of the second verse at open mic. I didn't need to be depressed again this morning. I need a positive "you can do it!" kind of song today.

Kid,

That song may fit the criteria of a protest song to The Philboy, and I suppose it is;  but S.O.B.  I liked it.

You're going to get an old guy fired up with a song like that.  Good thing I'm not in the beer; actually I could handle this one easily without the beer; but I'll show restraint (that restraint part is what I have a difficult time with while in the beer).

I'll leave it alone (biting hand trying to keep mouth shut)

OD

By the way, I thought it was extremely well crafted and well written.

Hey guys,

Yep, good one from Toby, but you are not going to hear on mainstream radio because people will now SUE the station to get it pulled off. Why? Because it takes a position that is not the politically correct one, that criminals are misquided people and of course it is a white guy in a Southern accent singing it. Not gonna happen any more. But of course it is the truth and that has been the biggest casualty of the Internet.

Read the comments below the song and you start to see the deal. A few agreeing comments and then they whole "who does he think he is"? business. Defies any common sense and logic. But there you go friends. It is where we live now.

OD, I didn't say I didn't like the song (at first). It wasn't until I stepped back and thought about the message. Here is your challenge. Listen to it again. IF you can find even ONE WORD that offers HOPE things the song complains about will change, or one word that offers a SOLUTION to the problems the song complains about, I will completely retract my statement and post an apology. Like I said, I got depressed enough last night. I need something POSITIVE this morning!!

Phil,

You are not going to get it on this kind of song. It is an "issue oriented" song and the same thing we see on television and the Internet every minute of everyday. It is why I don't care for these songs. They are just saying the same things we already know. It is also why they have limited affect anymore. Toby is saying something he wants to say (Preach, Vent and Whine) and he is an "ICONIC" artist so he can. Actually ANYONE can.

This is what we hear about half of on writer's nights here and pretty much the  majority of input when it comes to most outside writers. This is what they write. Granted, it is well written, but it is not going to do much. Certain people, who agree with the sentiment will say "Hell Yeah!!!! There is someone saying what I FEEL!!!!" And the rest, who don't agree with it, have their OWN take on it, will walk away with ANOTHER reason they HATE COUNTRY MUSIC and TOBY KEITH.

You pick your battles and if you are a successful artist/writer, you can decide what you fight. Most people don't have that luxury. But this is not where you are going to get any ROPE OF HOPE. This is just going to either reinforce your belief, or reinforce your disagreement of that belief.

Ok, I have a question. Many times on here it has been said that a songwriter should learn to play an instrument.

So now I am considering to do just that. My husband suggested that I get a guitar and learn to play. I am a little concerned, because I hear how it hurts  your fingers and people even have their fingers bleeding. I need my fingers for my paying job. And do I really want callouses on my fingers??

I thought maybe a keyboard would be easier. Plus some of them have drums etc. on them. Something about a guitar is pretty cool, but I just don't know which would be  better and easier to learn at this stage.

I know it takes years to be good and I don't plan on playing in front of people, just to help with the songwriting.

Maybe some of our ladies will comment on this one as well.

so help me make a decision.....

Hi Peggy

It is a difficult question as you are looking to help your songwriting not become a virtuoso on an instrument. Learning basic chords is not too difficult on the guitar and I can play basic chords on the keyboard, though need to spend more time improving my ability. It may be for aiding songwriting either would do and choosing which comes down to the one you have more aptitude for.

You quickly get used to playing the guitar and your fingers do get used to it. I have never bled playing - that would happen if you were doing a lot of sliding along strings and a fret was rough, for example.

Try and get a loan of a guitar / keyboard before buying. See how you feel as you'll get a feeling if it's for you - fun or a chore. Like everything, you will get moments when you think you're going nowhere but keep on.

I was lucky when I was learning, my sister's boyfriend (non military) worked for the military and was stationed in remote areas around the world doing nothing until some electronics went wrong. He took a guitar with him to alleviate the boredom and left his Gibson for me to look after!

I am sure others can put it better ;-)

Peggy,

Most excellent idea! Guitar or keyboard, either one is fine and you can find touch sensitive keyboards relatively inexpensively. Here is an article I found on keyboards .

A guitar is more portable and you should not have bloody fingers unless you are doing it wrong or playing 10 hours on your first day!   Plus guitar callouses shouldn't cause any issues or be noticeable.     If you play 15-30 minutes every day, then you will be as good as you need to be in a year or so.   Keyboards are fine and you should be able to find a good teacher.  Just let them know why you want to play piano (or guitar) and see if they will tailor the lessons that way.  Chords and scales, melody in right hand and chords in left (piano) -- you can do it!   Start now.  You will be one year older in a year anyway, might as well learn to play.
