Santa, Me and My Mercury
© Gary Orphey
(Verse 1)
It was just after midnight,
The Christmas of ninety-five,
When I took my hot rod Mercury
Out for a late night drive
It was chopped and channeled
Lowered, decked and domed,
With a smokin’ hot engine
A V-8 covered with chrome.
(Verse 2)
I was cruisin’ the highway,
Looking off to the side.
I saw someone broken down
I thought they needed a ride.
I pulled a u-turn fast as I could,
Hurried to find my way back.
The first thing I saw was ten reindeer,
And Santa with his sleigh on a jack.
(Verse 3)
His crazy ride had broken down,
One of its runners was gone,
He said, “I have gifts to deliver,
They have to be there by dawn.”
He stood just across from me,
In his sequined Santa suit,
I’ve had some strange encounters,
But this one was a real hoot.
(Verse 4)
With a little smile on his face,
And a twinkle in his eye,
He said, “I need some help my friend,
I’m thinking you’re the guy.”
His round eyes slowly drifted,
To my candy red forty-nine Merc,
Then he turned around to me and said,
“I’m bettin’ that baby will work.”
(Verse 5)
I thought he was a real nut job
I told him that “My car won’t fly.”
“The magic’s in the Reindeer son,
Tonight you’re gonna’ ride the sky.”
We hitched up Rudolph to my Merc,
Along with the other Reindeer,
Then we took off for the heavens,
Both grinning from ear to ear.
(Verse 6)
Now Santa, me and my Mercury,
Were rocketing through the air,
Delivering Christmas presents,
To everyone, everywhere
When the long, long night was over,
We flew back to the North Pole,
Hitched a new sleigh to my car,
And Santa took me on back home.
(Bridge)
I’m sure that there are some of you,
Who don’t have that Christmas glow.
But for those of you who really do,
There’s something you should know.
(Verse 7)
Don’t be shocked on Christmas should you see;
You’re house buzzed by a hot rod Mercury.
Because when you hear that ho-ho-ho,
On your roof you’re gonna’ know,
It’s Santa, me and my Mercury.
Just Santa— me and my Mercury
Just Santa— me and my Mercury
