Chris Price songs
Based on Psalm 137, this song follows the same structure as the original psalm having 3 stanzas of 4 lines each. It also follows the themes of each original stanza.
"See your saviour comes" is an overlay (as is the last line "When we reach heaven's gate") that points to the ultimate answer to this psalm which comes in Revelation 18 - the fall of Babylon - and maranatha ("Come, Lord Jesus") in Rev 22.
Ancient Babylon fell in 539 BC to Cyrus the Great of Persia.
By the rivers of Babylon
We weep most every day
The harps that made us joyful
Have all been put away
Our captors mock and taunt us
To sing our songs of joy
The songs of our great city
The one they did destroy
See your saviour comes
How can we sing the Lord's song?
In this unholy land
Can I forget Jerusalem?
The strength of my right hand
If I forget my motherland
May I forget to sing
My mouth be dry and silent
A bell that cannot ring
See your saviour comes
O Lord you heard them mocking
When we were led in shame
Repay them for their arrogance
They sneered and cursed your name
The tables will be turned on you
Destruction is your fate
Your glory will be ashes
When we reach heaven's gate
See your saviour comes
See your saviour comes
