Sometimes the words come first, sometimes the song. As I recall, I was sitting on the porch swing playing one day, and part of the melody was sweeping through the ether. I managed to reach out and catch it before it left. 
This was recorded on two tracks (guitar and vocals)with a TEAC A-3440 reel to reel 4 track
