SOUL LIKE A ROCK

© Gary Orphey

(Intro) spoken

Some people are tougher than others

Some are fighters, some just talk

It doesn’t matter how they do it

Tough people have a soul like a rock

(V1)

When I was just a little boy

I lived next door to an old cowboy

He taught me rope tricks and his name was Jim

He took me to my first

Rodeo and what’s worse

He gave me my first taste of that roamin’ life

(V2)

I used to go there after school

We’d sit and talk and shoot the bull

He’d tell to me about life in his cowboy days

Then one day I noticed that thing

That pretty shiny diamond ring

He kept on a chain around his neck

(Bridge)

When I mentioned the ring

I saw a tear in his eye,

But he blinked it away like a tough guy

Then told me about a love he had lost

(V3)

In a flooded river in a driving rain

He tried to save her but all in vain

It was a tale well told of a tragedy

Her last words were on that fateful day

As the raging river swept her away

“I love you, I’ve always loved you.”

(Chorus)

A stronger man I’ve never known

He was tough all the way to the bone

He talked loves talk, he walked loves walk,

( 4 beat intro into...)

He had a soul like a rock, (+ backup singers)

He loved her, would always love her,

He had a soul like a rock, (+ backup singers)

The cowboy had a soul like a rock.

(Outro)

So I say to you before I’m through

A true love is never through with you

If my friend... you have a soul like a rock

Nice write Gary. Good story writing. Is this already set to music?  I'd love to hear it. (did you mean "A stronger man I've NEVER known?)

Hey Skipp..thanks for the nice words.  Yes on the left off  'N'.  Thanks for the careful read, I appreciate the catch. I will correct it. (I have a case of the stupids this morning) Coffee, I need coffee!

Yup, I have the music to it. I write everything with guitar in hand. (Not to say I don't have notes scribbled everywhere there is a piece of paper. )

Lyrics come when I play..I love it!

Hi Gario,

This is gut wrenching. A really powerful write. Is this a true story? Can't wait to hear it as a finished

song. Please give us the heads up when it's done and dusted.

Thanks Gwyneth,

Yup a true story. One of those things that happened when i was very young that never went away because I cherish the that old cowboys memory.  I still have a silver Chinese ring he gave me around 1952  that he picked up in Korea when he fought in the Korean War. He treated me like I was his own. It's crazy I know, but as a man over seventy now I still feel like I was one of his own.

I appreciate your kind words for sure!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh are you trying to make me cry? LOL OMG !!!!! That is sooooooo touching!! This is a beautiful tribute

thanks for sharing your incredible talent with us.

I love Cowboys, always have, always will, and true Cowboy stories are the best!!! They don't make

them like that anymore, so every now and then when I find a Cowboy like you, it's like finding lost treasure Happy
