Back to Open Mic

This song took me 8 years to complete. I wrote it when my Dad passed away on April 29, 2001. I couldn't even bring myself to record it until late last year. It was so emotional for me that I didn't even get a decent vocal track until about a week or so ago.

My humble thanks to Ken Matson for his incredible piano work, to Bobby Cabrera for his incredible harmonies and to Rami for his impeccable work on drums. You guys are the best and I couldn't have done it without your help.

The song will give you an insight to the kind of person my Dad was. He was great!

Hey, Dad... I miss you!

Verse 1

Hey, Dad
Next time I see you we'll share a smile
And I'll tell you all the things I've done
Since you've been gone awhile
And Dad
I've tried to live the way you taught
I look everybody in the eye
And listen when they talk

Verse 2

And hey, Dad
I miss the fun that we had here
Playing catch and hunting deer
And fishing from the foggy pier
And Dad
I really miss the talks we had
'Cause there's no one here to guide me now
When things are going bad

Chorus

And I know you're out there somewhere
With a big one on the line
Making the angels laugh out loud
One line at a time
And though you mean the world to me
I never will forget
I wasn't finished talking to you yet

Bridge

Dad I swear sometimes I hear your voice inside my brain
Telling me you're happy now and not feeling the pain

Verse 3

Hey, Dad
I know I wasn't always right
But when the challenge stood before me
I stood up to the fight
And Dad
I know our time may soon be gone
So one more favor
Say "Hi" to Mom

Final Chorus

And I know you're out there somewhere
With a big one on the line
Making the angels laugh out loud
One line at a time
And though you mean the world to me
I never will forget
I wasn't finished talking to you yet
I wasn't finished talking to you yet
Hey, Dad

Jeff,
I know how hard this song was for you to do. Can't imagine how you got thru the vocals on this. Just a superb tribute to your Dad. He was obviously a great guy and superb Dad. I'm certain he was truly proud of you.

Extremely special song. I couldn't keep the tears from coming as I listened to it, as I have been there as well.

Superb, my friend.

This has to be one of the finest tributes I have ever heard in my life. The singing is as good as it gets with lyrics that make the tears fall down.
This is worth all the effort it took, Jim. The back up is an all star cast.

Wow, I've said this only a few times. Every once in a blue moon I hear a song that makes me want to throw all my stuff away and this is one of them. Listening to your song I also miss your dad and I never met him. But the song I think is true how most kids feel about there fathers. I am fortunate that my dad is still here at 85. Thank you great song.
