Back to Open Mic

This is the first song on Sergio's CD. I wrote the lyrics a couple of years ago when my sons were nearing earning their blacks belts. They now are 10 & 12, and both are 2nd-degree black belts.

How I Became a Black Belt

Words by Jeff Mondak
Music by Sergio Wals Vocal by Sergio Wals
Music performed by Alex Stangl, except acoustic guitar by Sergio Wals and piano by Jeff Mondak

A week ago Sunday with weather so warm,
Karate class met in the park.
We practiced our kicks, then we studied our form,
And chopped at the sycamore bark.

I sat and I rested beneath that great tree
While Christopher worked on his stance.
My mind was so focused that I didn't see
The ants marching straight up my pants.

The ants in my britches were biting me there.
The bite marks were starting to swell.
I itched, so I kicked and I clawed at the air,
Then spun as I let out a yell.

I twirled and I jumped with such dizzying speed
While trying to scratch at the bites.
The teachers looked on and then quickly agreed
My skills had reached masterful heights.

For twenty-three minutes I pranced without pause.
I shrieked at each itchy red welt.
I finished at last to the Master's applause.
He bowed and he gave me his belt.

The ants in my britches were biting me there.
The bite marks were starting to swell.
I itched, so I kicked and I clawed at the air,
Then spun as I let out a yell.

Great fun song. Hilarious verse here:

I twirled and I jumped with such dizzying speed
While trying to scratch at the bites.
The teachers looked on and then quickly agreed
My skills had reached masterful heights

Nice one!

Congrats on the young 'uns' high grades too. Which style?

This is a splendid song. It's a long way from having the initial idea to producing the finished result but this lyric moves along flawlessly and seamlessly. That's a nice vocal by Sergio too.
The whole piece is a lot of fun.
Super!

(I'm even more impressed by your sons' martial arts achievements, Jeff! To earn a black belt at ten or twelve years old is a remarkable feat. Well done, boys!)
