UNDER STARS AND STRIPES

I am your soldier
On my way home

I am your lost son
Coming in from the cold

I was your anguish
Unaccounted for

I was your final wish
Before that knock on your door

Why must I say goodbye
If I’m not ready to leave you
Oh how could I take their lies
And let them deceive you

When flags fly at half staff
Trumpets sound half-truths
They cry freedom (we’re not free)
They cry justice (we’re not fair)
They cry, but where are their tears

You are my soldier
In from the cold

You are my lost son
Found your way home

You were my best years
Left far behind

You were my worst fears
Now realised

Why must I say goodbye
If I’m not ready to leave you
Oh how could I take their lies
And let them steal you

When they laid you under stars and stripes
You were only twenty two
And they cry freedom (I don’t care)
They cry justice (It’s not fair)
They cry, but you’re not here

So powerful Rael! I listened holding my breath! This is up there with the best anti war songs(Green Fields of France and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda being my all time favourites) ...beautiful in it's stark, sad simplicity! While I understand your choice of title, I'd be more inclined to call it "They Cry Freedom"..or even "They Cry..." ~ Diane

This is an incredibly beautiul and meaningful song. The melody is haunting and will stay in my head long after I stop listening.

Rael, great to have you back!

This is really gorgeous. Using chords we are all familiar with, you have created a haunting ballad that sounds like nothing else. The pacing and dynamics are careful, deliberate and perfect.
Andrew, your playing and singing is precise and powerful. Your performance is one of absolute commitment to the song.
Great job to both of you. Perfect.

Peace, -PHil

Great stuff, Real. I like the way you captured the mood and sentiment of an age old human dilemma. But you created a modern feel with your music, setting it apart from the usual Protest, Folk style songs. Great lyric, simple and yet not too harsh and "to-the-point".
Good writing and very listenable. ~ John
