LOOKING FOR JEFFSPOEMSFORKIDS? DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH MY PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATOR, I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REDEVELOPING THE SITE. THE NEW ADDRESS IS JEFFSPOEMSFORKIDS.ORG

This was fun for me. I got the idea for this from Nancy Parker and her students at Barkstall School. After posting the lyrics in the writer's room, I coaxed Alex Stangl into putting the song together, and he did his usual fantastic job.

And for any students out there, some questions:
1. What happened concerning Pluto in 1930?
2. Why is Mercury feeling hot?
3. A tough one: Why is Neptune nervous?
4. What does it mean that Pluto lacked the girth?
5. Where is Prague, who met there, and when was the meeting?

*Note: This song was named "Physics Song of the Month" for November 2006 by the American Association of Physics Teachers.

A clip from "Pluto's Not a Planet Anymore" was played on NPR's show "All Things Considered" on February 2, 2009. "All Things Considered" airs on 560 radio stations, and has a daily audience of 12 million people. The clip was played following an interview with Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who discusses the song in his new book "The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet." This song also has received a bit of local radio play, and it has been played in planetarium shows in the U.S., the U.K., Canada and Australia.

Here on Songramp, the song was #1 on the Songramp Song Chart (most played) for a good stretch, from October 26 to December 2, 2006, and then again from December 10 to December 13, 2006, again five months later on May 10-14, 2007, from January 28 to February 4, 2008, April 14, 2008, April 26 to May 1, 2008, August 11-14, 2008, August 20, 2008, February 3-9, 2009, March 30-April 2, 2009, February 22, 2011, February 25, 2011, July 31-August 6, 2012 and January 9, 2013. It also reached #1 (most favored) on September 24, 2006. On March 24, 2013, this song recorded it's 10,000th play on Songramp. Thanks for listening!

Sergio Wals has recorded a fun version of Pluto's Not a Planet Anymore. It is on his CD "Michael Closed the Bathroom Door." You can read about it here.

Pluto's Not a Planet Anymore

Performed by Alex Stangl
Music by Alex Stangl
Words by Jeff Mondak

Since 1930, quite a run
It always was the smallest one,
And oh so distant from the sun
But Pluto's not a planet anymore

Astronomers who had a look
Said "go re-write your science book"
They gave it the celestial hook
Now Pluto's not a planet anymore

Listen James and Janet
Some experts said to can it
Now Pluto's not a planet
No, Pluto's not a planet
Anymore

Uranus may be famous
But Mercury's feeling hot
For Pluto was a planet,
And somehow now it's not

Neptune's nervous, Saturn's sad,
And jumpin' Jupiter is hoppin' mad
Eight remain of nine we had
Pluto's not a planet anymore

They held the meeting here on Earth
Mars and Venus proved their worth
But puny Pluto lacked the girth
So Pluto's not a planet anymore

Listen James and Janet
Some experts said to can it
Now Pluto's not a planet
No, Pluto's not a planet
Anymore

They met in Prague and voted
Now Pluto's been demoted
Oh, Pluto's not a planet anymore

Great tune, makes one almost grab the hanky. Poor Planet Pluto ... what is the doggy gonna do? This song is timely. Great fun for history. (Side note: I think the book publishers came up with this "Pluto's Not A Planet Anymore" so they have to print new textbooks) You guys peg it well here! Tops! -Devin

This is fun! I hit the 'play' button straight from open mic without knowing what this was all about. The 'Stangl Vocal' was instantly recognizable. very clever lyrics. I for one, was kind of sad to ole Pluto get curb-sided. :-( -- Andy

Nice little groove on this one BG. I like what the drummer's doing and I almost want to say at least for me, it's got a kind of a Randy Newmann thing goin' on. Believe me, coming from me, that's very much a compliment, I love his writing. Well minus Short People and the like.BB

Jeff: Thanks for the promo and link by email. Great writing, Jeff, and excellent work, Alex. (You too, Lord). This song needs to be played somewhere beyond our community. It is that good. Matter of fact, it's out of this solar system.

Fun song, Jeff. Delightful lyrics. This is truly an eventful period that deserves to be remembered in song. But I remember a long time ago, back in the -50s reading in the Junior Schoolastic (current events) that astronomers were not sure what Pluto was back then. Then there's another point of view. Pluto was demoted but in the process it was given the classification of planetoid a distinction it shares with no one. The only other planetoids I have heard of exist only in Startrek.
BGJeff
2006-09-19
Thanks, everyone, for checking out the song! I had fun with it, and I certainly greatly enjoy what Alex and George did with it.
Now, as to the astronomers--although it's true that Pluto's status has always been controversial, Pluto was considered to be the 9th planet from the time of its discovery until its demotion 76 years later (I'm trying not to give away too many quiz answers!). And I believe Pluto's current official (International Astronomical Union) label is not "planetoid," but rather "dwarf planet." Pluto is one of three dwarf planets recognized thus far. It is second among them in size.

Jeff, great kid's song, good lyrics. I really liked George's take as well, kind of like Nitty Gritty Dirt Band meets PBS. Extra props for fitting "Uranus" in a kid's song. Should be good for some 3rd grade giggles. Or maybe it's just my immaturity showing. - Jim

I had voted for this somehow without posting a review--I loved it! I write lots of kids' songs (I'll post one next), and really enjoy the ones that entertain parents, too, and which aren't too dumbed-down. Poor Pluto--it's already out there on the edge of nothingness, and then it gets demoted. Great song! --Heidi

But Pluto IS still a planet. The IAU demotion was done by only four percent of its membership, most of whom are not planetary scientists, and was immediately rejected by an equal number of professional astronomers, many of whom are even now working to get the IAU decision overturned. They believe Pluto is a planet because of its spherical shape. You can find links to many pro-Pluto as a planet songs on my blog at http://laurele.livejournal.com
