Great tune, makes one almost grab the hanky. Poor Planet Pluto ... what is the doggy gonna do? This song is timely. Great fun for history. (Side note: I think the book publishers came up with this "Pluto's Not A Planet Anymore" so they have to print new textbooks) You guys peg it well here! Tops! -Devin |

This is fun! I hit the 'play' button straight from open mic without knowing what this was all about. The 'Stangl Vocal' was instantly recognizable. very clever lyrics. I for one, was kind of sad to ole Pluto get curb-sided. :-( -- Andy |

Nice little groove on this one BG. I like what the drummer's doing and I almost want to say at least for me, it's got a kind of a Randy Newmann thing goin' on. Believe me, coming from me, that's very much a compliment, I love his writing. Well minus Short People and the like.BB |

Fun song, Jeff. Delightful lyrics. This is truly an eventful period that deserves to be remembered in song. But I remember a long time ago, back in the -50s reading in the Junior Schoolastic (current events) that astronomers were not sure what Pluto was back then. Then there's another point of view. Pluto was demoted but in the process it was given the classification of planetoid a distinction it shares with no one. The only other planetoids I have heard of exist only in Startrek. |

Thanks, everyone, for checking out the song! I had fun with it, and I certainly greatly enjoy what Alex and George did with it. Now, as to the astronomers--although it's true that Pluto's status has always been controversial, Pluto was considered to be the 9th planet from the time of its discovery until its demotion 76 years later (I'm trying not to give away too many quiz answers!). And I believe Pluto's current official (International Astronomical Union) label is not "planetoid," but rather "dwarf planet." Pluto is one of three dwarf planets recognized thus far. It is second among them in size. |

Jeff, great kid's song, good lyrics. I really liked George's take as well, kind of like Nitty Gritty Dirt Band meets PBS. Extra props for fitting "Uranus" in a kid's song. Should be good for some 3rd grade giggles. Or maybe it's just my immaturity showing. - Jim |

I had voted for this somehow without posting a review--I loved it! I write lots of kids' songs (I'll post one next), and really enjoy the ones that entertain parents, too, and which aren't too dumbed-down. Poor Pluto--it's already out there on the edge of nothingness, and then it gets demoted. Great song! --Heidi |

But Pluto IS still a planet. The IAU demotion was done by only four percent of its membership, most of whom are not planetary scientists, and was immediately rejected by an equal number of professional astronomers, many of whom are even now working to get the IAU decision overturned. They believe Pluto is a planet because of its spherical shape. You can find links to many pro-Pluto as a planet songs on my blog at http://laurele.livejournal.com |
