Back to Open Mic

This just came out all at once basically the way it is. My Friend Sid came up with the general idea on the Santana-like lead guitar and it took a while for us to get it right. The song is about the anguish of a father who went through Vietnam and his 'Brave Young Man' son out in the wars (Iraq is the theme here).

Brave Young Men_
Words and Music by_
Xavier Calvera

Looking at the horizon_
In the first rays of light of the summer sun_
He just watches the bird as it flies along_
Getting lost in the darkness of
The sky again is falling_
And right now he knows he's been here before_
Looking back at his life and his own dammed war_
His heart goes out to his son who's there.

(Chorus)_Please father don't believe lies_
Dear, dear mother, oh please don't cry_
Its time again for brave young men to fight.
Please father don't tell me lies_
Dear mother oh please don't cry_
Its time again for brave young men to die

Instrumental bridge

The bird is back from the darkness_
The man believes that the sign is a lucky one_
He'll come back from the war and be an old man_
The sun is rising again in Sumer.

Please father don't believe lies_
Dear, dear mother oh please don't cry_
Its time again for brave young men to fight.
Dear Great Father don't tell me lies_
Mother oh please don't cry_
Its time again for brave young men to die.
Don’t tell me lies
Momma please don’t cry
I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna die,
I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna die, I don't wanna die.

glad you liked it Mike! the guitar man is my evil twin Elrod... The Black Tooth is on drums (Steve Tooth, he also co-produced Elrod Gerae) Larry Adamson on bass, yours truly on rhythm guitar, vocals and keys.

Like this a lot. Kil the fust in the opening bit. The line is cluttered and shows in the sing. Love the chorus sing, and backing. Break is great. Goes in my collection for sure. Graham

Not much for political songs, but this song somehow makes it more personal, which is a good thing. The production on this is exceptional, especially the guitar work! Is that Elrod on the guitar, or Xavi? Welcome to the Ramp! -Dennis

Very philosophical. Very close to the matter. Why do we ask our brave young men to die? Very original in a style I have never heard before. My main forte' is country so this could be the reason. Enjoyed. Keep up the good work.

Too bad this isn't being played on commercial radio. In my view as a 20-plus-year radio broadcaster, it would be a hit. Very topical! Thanks for the music.

You should be able to go high with your writing and music, The knowing how to bring the written word to a melody for singing seems so easy for you, In this song you're at your best. Jimmy Lee

whne I wrote this song back in 2003 the political climate was a little different then- that has changed- what hasn't changed is that is time again for brave young men to die- that is sad- I generally keep out of politics in my music- lord knows I got enough opinions myself and I am not one for preaching or moralizing- but this song had to come out the way it did. it is not really about politicks but about who pays the price of politicks- in this case, our "Brave Young Men"

Nice work here, Elrod! Soulful projection of good lyrics, and a rockin' 70's guitar motif. Like your wah pedal technique, and use of piano. Can't have too many songs pointing out the negative aspect of this war and others. First time listening to your music, but not the last. Peace! - Rick

I still don't understand why modern musicians feel the need to apologize for writing about political themes in music...the bards have done it for centuries, so why should we cower now? This is a wonderfully crafted song, it manages to touch on the fears of parents whose children are going off to war without getting into the stereotypical "kumbaya"-style sentiment. I give it a thumb up for that.

IN TIMES OF WAR AS IN TIMES OF PEACE WE AL NEED MUSICIANS / SONGWRITERS AND ALL OTHER ARTISTS TO COMMUNICATE WHAT WE ALL MAY BE FEELING BUT FIND IT HARD TO PUT IT IN WORDS.MUSICIANS AND ARTIST KEEP ON CREATING.

Hits home right now as I see these brave young men out here. I have a son who is going into the air force and another that is considering enlisting in the army. It hits home. It is one thing to be there yourself but when your own children start to get involved it becomes a painful reality. Great song, got me all emotional.
